    First Roar Hunt

    G'day all,

I went out to my hot spot for my first ever hunt in a roar (missed the last 2 due to Batallion excercises not by choice!) Exciting stuff.

It was my second ever solo hunt longer than a day trip too which was immensely satisfying, although company would've been nice in the down time. (3 days/2 nights).

I didn't manage to bowl a stag but expereinced the rush of roaring one in to about 75 meters in the bush before the wind sharply changed and I guess he got our scent boy did he bolt! Didn't get a glimpse longer than half a second for a shot but was long enough to see he had a decent rack on him.

I stalked in on some hinds and a couple of spikers but left them as it was a trophy I was after. Weather was average but shit I had fun. Going out again this weekend so fingers crossed.

It was poochs first proper deer hunt too and after a quick reinforcing lesson in following, staying and getting behind at the truck before we set off, he quickly picked up the jist and peformed well. Even tracked one of said spikers I mentioned above on the way out. Didn't bark or yelp once, although when the stag was coming in at us he was pretty excited but managed to keep it under control with minimal excited shaking. Great fun.

Hopefully next week I'll have more to report - just wanted to share the little progress this southern man is making!

    Happy hunting

Cheers guys. Got told to shut up at work today after ranting about my close(ish) encounter with the stag and I haven't even got a trophy yet! Poor work mates don't hear the end of my hunting trips. If getting a stag is anything like getting my first hind and spiker last year then these poor colleagues of mine won't get a word in till next Christmas. On the positive side, one of the blokes I took out rabbit shooting has just got his FAL and purchased his first .22 with sights set on bigger and better things soon.

Good on you for getting out there and thanks for filling us in. Rant to us as much as you want. The thrill of earning your first deer will far out weigh your first love. Trust me, I know (so does @Scouser but he hasn't admitted it - yet)
A cantab stag is on my "to do" list
