Make sure your bag with bolt and ammo in it is also x-rayed at the O'sized check in area. Last week I flew Porn(Jet)star and they put my bag containing bolt and ammo in with the normal bags - AVSEC pulled my bag at the normal passenger x-ray area and my bag missed it flight. It actually missed the next flight and they didn't know where my bag was but that's anoother story.

Pornstar via QANTAS now also have a dangerous goods decleration form/permit its an online form and free to apply for. AKL didn't ask to see it CHCH did. Just have it on your phone.

Stay at the O'size check in x-ray area for a couple of minutes after your bag has dissapeared or untill staff say you can go. Just in case they have any questions or items they want you to procure/explain.

Hard locked case for firearm and ammo has to be in original packaging or if handloads a box that prevents the brass from touching each other - I flew with handloads and they were fine with my 20 round handload case

Was BINGO the name of the farmer or the dog?

Make sure ammo in a normal cartridge box (and it cant come undone). Flew to Chch and found bag had been "inspected" and item removed. The box had allowed 3 rounds to come loose. Instead of reinserting in the plastic holder they confiscated them. Auckland is far easier than the pillocks in Chch. Took an old style hard case down south, no problem in Ak but returning via Chch told it wasnt satisfactory - "come see my manager". He confirmed as not satisfactory, so - "lets go to the next manager up". "No, unsatisfactory, I will check with head office". Eventually sanity prevailed - "you can travel with it this time but your file will be noted" (didnt know they kept files on passengers). I was about to point out to them that it wasnt a serviceable firearm (no bolt/ammo) and the only people who could access it were their own staff, with heaps of security cameras watching them. Luckily it didnt get to the nasty stage.
Another instance passing thru security. Pulled aside. "What have you got in that day pack sir?" Just the normal, camera, etc. He then proceeded to dig through and triumphantly pulled out an empty cartridge case. "Whats this then?" Police were called over and I was grilled. Nearly missed my flight. Wankers

Just arrive at airport with plenty of time and ring before arriving to advise you are checking in a firearm.
