I dunno. What are the following all about?
4. Issuing authorisations for hunting
These authorisations would be issued in accordance with the provisions of an approved herd management plan. This function is likely to be delegated to the Game Animal Council.
6. Appointing enforcement and honorary enforcement officers
The Director-General has the function of appointing warranted officers and honorary enforcement officers under the Act. This function will only be necessary once a herd of special interest has been designated.
And who decides the herd of special interest ?
we do not need the Game Animal Council - what we need is DOC to have had a major boot in the fundamental parts and start being pro - active about recreational hunting starting with access - DOC have the say not GAC - I can see it being cancelled under this Govt and thats a good thing
Christ Barry, What's the GAC done to you? you seem to have a major hatred for it.
IMO what is basically a lobby group working alongside the likes of the NZDA can only be a good thing for hunters. couple that with the excellent hunter training resource they have made, the map program they've been working on and I am pretty hopeful about them.
DOC for the last forever has not been interested in hunting and has clearly seen our various game species as pests only.
I dont hate them - I just dont see the need for them and at tax payers expense - we already as tax payers pay for DOC and DOC does administer all Public Conservation land - they should do more - I am hopefull this new Govt might ramp things up for hunters -we will see -what is scary is with major cuts to all Govt Departments incl DOC who funds this GAC and how - I find the whole thing damn scary- my last on this - just watch out thats all I can say - pay for permits next to fund GAC I bloody hope not

With DOC in bed with Twig & Tweet, we need another organization along side NZDA to challenge their tunnel vision agenda.
I would like to share your confidence in DoC Barry, but I dont! Sick and tired of the anti hunting, anti animal, woke bunch of twats in DoC uniforms and higher up. The GAC has some creedence, it is sought out for input in to our game animals and the hunting scene in NZ. Combined with the NZDA, Colfo, the Wapiti Foundation, the Sika Foundation, the present government, Nicole McKee, and others that I've forgotten, Im somewhat more confident that we are making progress to having hunting recognised as it should be.
The Conservation Act will never allow DOC to do the things that the GC can and will.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

You got one thing right Barry, DOC need a full re-boot & explicit instructions to do their bloody job with out bias. Give them 6 month to pull finger & if they have not changed their ways then fire all of the top layer of DOC. If that doesn’t create the right response & outcome then remove next layer.
As the OP I was most interested in the call for nominations for new members.
Gotta be at least 1 worthy here who could contribute meaningfully ?
I have to disagree. From what I have seen they have been extremely proactive and professional and great representatives too the govt on our behalf. They have a foot in the door re legislation and I can see a place for them having close to ultimate control over much of our resource.
What we do need, is to grow up as a group and start a method from within our community too at least partially fund them.
On the whole the GAC has done a good job, along with NZDA we have been getting some traction which we need to make the most of with the new Govt. if we have to pay say $20 for a permit to help fund it then so be it.
Shut up, get out & start pushing!
