    Getting closer

    How many hunt Stewart Island?

Do you think they will use deer repellant?

Nice one, but it's the blind leading the blind.

I thought possums were herbivores? Do herbivores now count as predators? Admittedly they look like giant tree rats so maybe thats why....

I dont object to possums being targetted but if they cannot get something simple like the terminoligy correct, what hope do they have of geting anything more difficult even close to being OK?

The predation of bird eggs and chicks has led them to be referred to as "reluctant folivores" in that they eat foliage to survive but prefer other foods.[16]

so thats why they get the tag of predator - they directly compete for berries and shoots that bird species need

as for deer repellant one would bloody hope so - unfortunately the addition of repellant adds cost - a 1080 operation on Stewart Island would have significant other cots such as transport of bait - so wait and see -

The Islands deer, cats, rats, possums and mice along with the kiwi and lots of other bird species have been living their lives in complete
harmony for many, many decades and more.
There will always be those who simply can not leave nature to do it's own thing..
I'm not in the least surprised to see so many who are still so blind to the bigger picture.

The Islands deer, cats, rats, possums and mice -- not one was on the Island 150 years ago - but man they must really grow the good stuff down your way for you to believe they live in Harmony with the bird life ( with the exception of a low deer population )

Theres no mice on the Island, the rats see to that. They are also targeting hedgehogs. Deer arn't on there list as yet. Its getting very close for the banded dotterel to becoming extinct down here due to feral cat predation. Go onto zips [zero invasive pests] website for details so far.

This is good news. If they can kill all of the cats/dogs/rats and possums the island should become an even bigger tourist destination

We are more likely to get deer repellent now than we would have if it were done a year ago.

As for using deer repellant I think it will add significantly to the cost so it won't be used, I hear there are those that would like to see deer eradicated from Stewart Island also.

Are Zip or Predator Free Rakiura govt organisations?

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing for 70 years (this year marks the 70'th year of using the stuff here) and expecting something different to happen.

It is in the proposal you linked:

    WILL ZIP USE DEER REPELLENT?

Deer repellent is being considered to minimise the impact of predator removal operations on deer. A decision on the use of deer repellent will be informed by further consultation with iwi, hunting leadership, DOC, and other stakeholders.

This is why it is so important that we support the NZDA & the GAC.

I doubt anyone's expecting anything different to happen: Just the usual lowering of introduced mammal populations and increased survival rates and breeding success of native species. Though it's not as if the way 1080 is used hasn't changed.
