    Goat Hunting close to Hamilton?

    Hey Team!

The Wife and I are looking for some nearby hunting.

Both of us are re-new to hunting this year, after a lack of for the past decade.

We have been getting out to the Pureoras and Wanganui National Park as frequently as life will allow us.

I am yet to get my first Deer, however, this doesnt fuss me as it only encourages me to get out more.

Over the past weekend my wife got her first goat, and has re-caught the bug.

We are hoping someone may know of a place nearer to Hamilton with Goat, that we might be able to visit and build a bit more of the wifes confidence, so she is 100% all in when we venture furthur.

I am not asking for free and / or easy, but any suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

    Adam

Try the end of the Waitawheta valley in the Kaimais. Access off backroad near Waihi. There is a fancy newish hut towards the end of the valley with easy benched walking access from Franklin roadend.

Awesome @Ingrid 51, Thank you! I shall give it a crack! I didn't think there was much in the way of Goat in the Kaimais, but I am keen to go for a look!

Plenty of goats on DOC land along the way to Kawhia and southern side of Pirongia. Saw three pigs in bright daylight the other day as well. Make sure you know the boundaries of private <=> public land before going and you will be fine...

@Micky Duck, tell me about it mate! Driving back to Hamilton on Sunday, saw them everywhere both sides of Taumaranui! Dont mind doing that trip once every couple of weeks. Just need something closer in the interim. Maybe around Ngarawahia / Huntly or something

Got to get ourselves ready for next roar when I come back down to Geraldine!

@JaSa, Pirongia / Kawhia would be perfect! All rumours I had heard suggested minamal numbers of Goats, so your recent experiance there is very useful information! Thank you!

It's the only place I know that sells Deer Cheese! I staged there before heading to Lilybank Station and passed back through on my way to Inverary Station. Think its an awesome town!

Do a search back on the forum. People have given quite a bit of advice on this topic in years gone by.

Bugger all goats in the Waitawheta end of the Kaimais now, @kiwi-adam. I know cos I live there. DOC cullers have been through twice in the last three years and cleaned out the rather disparate mob that had gradually moved north and west from the central part of the forest park. Last time they came through they did a letter drop as it was close to us, and I spent a fruitful period picking off the odd goat as they tried to get out of the DOC land across the river onto private land.

Whilst its not that busy now, in a few weeks it'll be heaving with tourists walking the tracks. The Waitawheta Hut is bookings only, and you'll see soon enough how busy it gets. Mate, hunters trying to share walking tracks with hordes of jaffa trampers is never a great idea. It's very hard to get off the tracks unless you're in the older forest with taller trees and less scrubby shite in the understory. The DOC rangers are thick as with all the track improvements they're doing, and the main bloke who's from the Thames office is rabid anti-hunting in that part of the park. They are wanting to clean out the deer (there's a few runty ones around in the NE) and change the status of the northern part of the park to no hunting, due to the tourist numbers.

Seriously mate, you're much better off to go chasing deer and goats in the central and southern part of the park. And no I'm not just trying to put others off. I don't hunt in there at all these days.
