    Goat Hunting Wellington

    Hi Guys

Am a new bee into hunting in Wellington. I have tried several times in Kaitoke Regional Park (Marchant Road), and Hutt Water Catchment area but to no avail. Apart from whole days walking I didnt ever manage to get any sight of a goat pig or deer.

Looking forward to making some friends and also very much interested to join for a hunting trip. Please do let me know of some locations where I can reach good goat hunting locations.

Waiting to hear from you friends to learn and enjoy my first success

Welcome to the forum Initiaz. There are a few Wellington based members that will be able to point you in the right direction I am sure.

Less walking, more looking There are animals in the areas you mention, slow down. Look at clearings, flat areas with early/late sun. Check wind direction and go back at different times of the day.

Thanks for the advise mate. I will definitely try this places again in the coming weekends. Just a question:

Is hunting allowed in areas through and around the Rimutaka incline and through the Trig track to the Rimutaka Summit. I cant seem to find a exact answer for this.

Ummm not anywhere near the track, I believe that from the summit and south from there is ok,

If ever in doubt check this website .......... Wellington hunting: Where to hunt in the Wellington/Kapiti region you dont want to be that guy that gets caught at the wrong place at the wrong time and have your licence taken off you

Greater Wellington Regional Council have pamphlets (available online as well) with maps showing hunting boundaries for Water Collection Area, Pakuratahi & Akatarawa. If you are not sure, call the GWRC office and they can put you in contact with the local ranger.

If you draw a line from Climie 2 to Incline Summit, pretty much no hunting north of that, so that is the Kaitoke end of the incline, tunnel gully etc. On the other side Puffer saddle itself is also no hunting, best to look at the maps.

If youre specifically looking for goats , then I wouldn't bother with those two areas. However the rimutakas have good goat numbers and that's where I go when I need some wild lamb, the last two trips ive seen at least 2-3 small mobs and always take a couple home.

And by the way I wouldn't expect you to see something on your first trip, especially the areas you mentioned, but you need to know the area and what the weather is doing is important

Also if you trailride the Akatarawas there is often goats in there - licenses to ride there are free and come with a map courtesy of a call to Wgtn Regional Council Upper Hutt office
