Thread: Goat/Pig/Pest hunting South of Auckland

Hey Guys,

So I am really keen to get out and shoot some goats / Pests south of Auckland, I don't mind travelling as well.

I have searched the forum and not found anything related.

I have driven around Port Waikato area and there seems to be a lot of Goats around but from chatting to the locals it seems the farmers are farming goats now. the farmers that are culling goats are already full up with hunters keen to get in and help with the problem. Also, the area seems to have been hit with a lot of poaching of late and the area is under surveillance now as a result. i do have permission from 3 farmers in Pukekohe to shoot the rabbits that are creating huge holes and are a hazard to thier horses, but the bunnies are getting a little thin now and i would like to try my hand at larger game.

I have all the necessary DOC permits to hunt on open land, and I am keen to get out into the bush I don't mind doing the long yards just so long as there is some kind of result.

Can anyone suggest an area that I can try, tips tricks, pointers etc, please?

Have a look on docs website there is a lot of areas in the waikato thats public land that will have goats and the odd pig

Try one or more of the North Waikato DOC blocks. I've had access to both "my" spots pulled out from under me, so will be finding new spots soon.

Can you hunt any of that land through Mokau to Uriti? Crawling with them

Yes. My site doesn't store the state of which layers are active. Defaults to topo50. Choose Hunting/recreational. "Access" shows all the stuff from wams.org.nz - paper roads, etc.

Nah got it mate, was looking on my phone and couldn't quite pick up the light brown overlay. Quite a bit there really.
