Hi All,
Im really struggling to find anywhere within 2 - 3rs of Auckland,
Just after somewhere to shoot goats every now and then (like everyone else i guess)
It know everyone will robably asking / wanting the same thing but again i just thought i would try my luck :)
If anyone can help out it would be awesome...

I'm sure there's a few old goats driving down the motorway everyday! 2.5-3 hrs makes me feel better bout the 3hr return trip to get any round here

Talk to DOC Maniapoto, there are quite a few small blocks with numerous goat numbers, but there has also been heaps of 1080.

Until you go look for yourself, you're relying on old (possibly out of date) info on animal presence. I've found goats in the Kaimais, in Coromandel ranges, and in the North Waikato DOC blocks I've tried (haven't tried them all). I haven't tried anywhere further south, but Pirongia and King Country allegedly have higher goat numbers. Again, this is all just hearsay. Even a negative result will help paint a picture of where the animals are or aren't.Quote:

Pirongia has just been culled by pro shooters, southern and western side. I used to hunt up there a lot when training my GSP and it was easy to 1-2 dozen a day. All bush hunting
Tommy and I were planning a trip to SW Pirongia until we found out cullers were to be operating in there at the same time. I'd say it would still be worth a look if they're finished culling. No one but DOC and the cullers have any info on how successful they were, and the fact that it's just been culled is likely to mean most people won't bother, having assumed cullers have wiped out every last animal. Well done Stretch - and good advice... The wee spot I was in in the weekend (South Waikato) down by the hydro lakes looked like there had been quite a bit of foot traffic of late and carcasses found about less than a week or two old... I initially thought one of the NZDA groups had been through.... as it was still quite quiet. But could have been targeted by the cullers too. I'd well prefer that over the green stuff that's for sure, and they'll bounce back given they can drop their young upto 3 times a year I'm told.
I'm not sure but someone on FB was saying Pureora hadn't been dropped on the Northern parts, yet so maybe that's a good option if you can get confirmation from DOC.

Also, if you're 'only' after goats, I wouldn't worry too much about the 1080 drops. I came across a scientific study done in the 80s by DSIR or some other govt department that tested the effectiveness of various poisons on goats. The short story is that no matter what they laced the various poisons with to make them palatable to goats, the goats wouldn't touch them.
The conclusion was that you can't effectively poison a population of goats like you can other species, and that a high velocity lead injection is the way to go.

They're a good fundraiser. We raised money from our one for reel recovery ( fishing retreats for guys who have cancer like the one we tried to get Toby to but by the Sika show he was already fading unfortunately) on a couple of places nearby to Wharepapa over the last couple of years and it's been great so the guys don't have to pay anything to attend when we run the retreats. That's certainly my and Craig's passion and we've been well supported by the locals and those further afield..

Spotted a few on Sunday and I can confirm they're looking plump! But certainly not as many as there were slinking around...
On Pirongia, nice access points are Corcoran Road and Greys Road. Both great, interesting country. Have a poke round the bottoms of some bluffs and take care if you're near the top of them. Unlikely to get more than a couple of goats in a day, though. Allow plenty of time try to leave your car by 09:00 if it's winter.
In the Kaimais there seem to be more up towards the north end. Try up the Waitawheta valley or Waiorongomai stm but both places have lots of trampers so be on your good behaviour. Again one or two in a day will be good going if you don't have a dog.

leave gates how you found em unless the farmer asks you to do otherwise
if you don't respect the land you'll lose it also a box of beer for the farmer to say thanks will never go a miss
btw, goats don't eat 1080 that's why they are culled
