Goats: within 2.5 - 3hrs of Auckland ??

Well done Stretch - and good advice... The wee spot I was in in the weekend (South Waikato) down by the hydro lakes looked like there had been quite a bit of foot traffic of late and carcasses found about less than a week or two old... I initially thought one of the NZDA groups had been through.... as it was still quite quiet. But could have been targeted by the cullers too. I'd well prefer that over the green stuff that's for sure, and they'll bounce back given they can drop their young upto 3 times a year I'm told.

I'm not sure but someone on FB was saying Pureora hadn't been dropped on the Northern parts, yet so maybe that's a good option if you can get confirmation from DOC.

Also, if you're 'only' after goats, I wouldn't worry too much about the 1080 drops. I came across a scientific study done in the 80s by DSIR or some other govt department that tested the effectiveness of various poisons on goats. The short story is that no matter what they laced the various poisons with to make them palatable to goats, the goats wouldn't touch them.

The conclusion was that you can't effectively poison a population of goats like you can other species, and that a high velocity lead injection is the way to go.

But we should get together with Tommy and a few of the others for a shoot sometime soon eh! could be a good trip... Was gonna suggest Turkeys but the b^&*ards have gone to ground in the last month just when they were getting to their plumpest and juicy-est!! requiring a bit of a re-think...

They're a good fundraiser. We raised money from our one for reel recovery ( fishing retreats for guys who have cancer like the one we tried to get Toby to but by the Sika show he was already fading unfortunately) on a couple of places nearby to Wharepapa over the last couple of years and it's been great so the guys don't have to pay anything to attend when we run the retreats. That's certainly my and Craig's passion and we've been well supported by the locals and those further afield..

Totally rate the turkey shoot for fundraising for supporting local causes - you hang onto those ones dude. :thumbsup:
Although would be cool to catch up with you and certainly @packhorse sometime down there - you guys are genuine good buggers!

Spotted a few on Sunday and I can confirm they're looking plump! But certainly not as many as there were slinking around...

On Pirongia, nice access points are Corcoran Road and Greys Road. Both great, interesting country. Have a poke round the bottoms of some bluffs and take care if you're near the top of them. Unlikely to get more than a couple of goats in a day, though. Allow plenty of time try to leave your car by 09:00 if it's winter.

In the Kaimais there seem to be more up towards the north end. Try up the Waitawheta valley or Waiorongomai stm but both places have lots of trampers so be on your good behaviour. Again one or two in a day will be good going if you don't have a dog.

How do cullers get paid? Do they get paid animal killed, with the tail presented as evidence, or what?
