The good old days ?

I am just helping a mate tidy up his Dad`s place due to the poor old boy being struck with oldtimers disease and having to go into care. Anyway, I noticed a few photos on the walls featuring deer, pigs, chams etc and ask about them.
Turns out that the old fella was a deer hunter/culler for a while and has a heap of old pics. I asked if I could share some around, so for a starter, here is a rougues gallery shot. The guys son is fairly sure it was in Te Urewera but doesn't know the people in it apart from Dad.
Dad is Roy Bernhard. The ears represent a mornings work according to family myth.

Does anyone recognise a face ? It would be great to put them back in touch.

Old timers disease, I got a bit of that, but still got my ears on! Some of these guys have lead extremely interesting life's, pity more notes aren't written down

Cool. There are lots more where that came from. Unfortunately they have been stuck into a self adhesive album so have to be removed very gently for scanning.

The album I have access to has a shed load of much older black and whites, but unfortunately they don't want to come out un damaged. I will try and find a way of scanning the entire page(s)

Smythes Hut....Mangoahane Station on the edge of the Mangoahane Plateau NW Ruahines...My Second home...Last there in May 2014.

I am going to study the rest of the photos as some of the faces are familiar. With your permission I will over time put these picture in the deercullers magazine. We often put up pictures like this and ask why where and who. You can bet that some of our members are present in these photos. Can you find out any more history on these photos Pengy. I just checked our membership list and Roy in not a member, at this time anyway.

Thanks Gibo, I had read the first post but I got so carried away with the photos that I forgot what I had read. Corrected now.

These photos are a snapshot of a great life led 'at least the early part of a great life led'.

Rifles present in one photo look like a BSA hunter and a cut down 303 which dates the photo to around early 60s 'Probably'. Though I see it is in the period when skins were taken so it may be earlier so I guess that doesn't help.

The country certainly could be the Ureweras not NW Ruahines where the hut photo came from. Any Photos of rolling tussock hills Pengy.

All I can say for sure Scribe, is that Roy hunted/culled in Te Urewera for a period. His two sons don't know much more than that.
There are more to come hopefully. Some are SI Thar hunting.
You are most welcome to include pics in the cullers mag.
If you email me, maybe I can arrange for you to view the whole album in person.

You are right 'Turehu' A private hunter received the ammo bonus above as the cullers.

To a culler depending on the era of course but say late 50s early 6os a set of deer ears and tail or a pig snout could well have been worth 2 shillings to 18 shillings each.

Plus it looks like they are taking deer skins at whatever the price was per pound.

That was as well as the ammo bonus above.

Is this thread OK for some other old timers? - I put one up in the photography section but not sure it was seen - was from fifty years back when I was seventeen - he was maybe sixty - can I put it up?

My father, like so many, after the war (he did not serve in the forces as he was too young) shot deer for the skins...you could trade the ears for ammo, ex-army .303...three rounds for a set...among them would be the odd tracer...

Some amazing pictures Pengy - it would be interesting to know the date of some of them - the E series plates on the Landy were issued between 1968 and 1970 so likely it was after that
I started hunting deer up the Tokomaru River just south of Palmy Nth in 64 - Henry Irwin lived in an old farm/lumber hut up the back of the Ryder farm - he was a bit of a recluse following issues around WW2
Henry earned his living from skins and he knew the Toko River catchment like the back of his hands - he was always happy to tell us young guys where he had done a burn and planted rye/clover seed
Must have been a hard case going to to Palmy on a Newmans bus to sell his skins and purchase supplies ;)
I have some wonderful memories of Henry - spent hours talking to him and he came out with us for a few hunts - this pic round 1967 - he may have been in his fifties -
