I would highly recommend the viewranger app no coverage needed, each map cost around $3. turn your phone to flight mode to save power and you can buy back up batteries for long trips.

Just got this app yesterday following your advice. Have the whole of NZ in 1:50,000 now. A lot more detailed than the Hunting NZ books maps that I was using. A few of those are 1:25,000 but too many are 1:250,000. Amazing app and the GPS seems to work nicely in flight mode, but I'm yet to try it in the bush. Has quite a few power saving modes too.

What sort of battery life do you get having the GPS on in flight mode all day and checking maps? Very impressed so far.

You can buy those extra power packs that you can plug your iPhone in to. Provides about another 2x the life of your built in battery I think. One of those combined with a car charger should be good for a few days I reckon but I'll let ya know how it goes. Would prefer not to have to buy a GPS - one less thing to carry!
