So what are everyone's thoughts on paying to shoot an animal?
I can see both sides of the story...
Plenty out there, don't be a lazy bugger etc
Work too much to get out, time poor with heaps of commitments (kids) etc...

I certainly wouldn't hassle you for it as long as you aren't shooting a farmed jobbie or one tied to a stick. Even teddy Roosevelt didn't do that (hence his name)
I aint one to judge, I cant afford to go out let alone have someone guide me lol.
I have guided Kiwis for all sorts of reasons. Most are/were well off, but busy.
2 of the best clients I have had were kiwis and unfortunately one of the worst was also home grown. [emoji16]
My mate who started me out in this game has guided tons of Kiwis. Quite a few you wouldn't expect. Ones that regularly appear in hunting mags etc.

I have a great guy, with his own block, has Fallow coming in from surrounding forest etc.
I pay as I get an overnight in great accomodation. I get “guided”, he glasses the area and has, obviously, great knowledge of his land.
On shooting an animal, he guts it and carry’s it out for me. It’s a great two day break from work, a good road trip and being 69 this year, I ain’t Bush bashing or steep hill climbing any more, my ring prefers to stay intact these days!
Keeps sausages an patties and good steak in the freezer.
Horses for courses and also great for younger guys learning the ropes, oh and I think it’s a cheap option for me and my mate, ywho’s a year older than me!
And it helps a young guy on a small holding with some cash!
Well I've toyed with the idea of doing a South Africa trip or Rusa in New Cali, still contemplating it?
If I win lotto I'd do a Moose, maybe a bear?
I'd pay. Never shot a deer and live in deer-free Northland (please, no mention of a deer seen in such and such far north forest in the mid-90s!). It's a matter of perspective. As a life long angler, I dislike guided fishing and even charter trips. As a beginner, you have to start somewhere. In addition to the actual experience, guided trips speed up the learning process significantly.
No issue with paying from me, Look at all the money we have invested in our gear etc. If you are meat hunting it could be a wise investment, most of us cannot hunt often enough to get good
All the social club trips I run are paid hunting.....usually self guided but paying for the access and hut and food....only meat animals we are not rich trophy hunters😉
It's pretty much a must to do this so as to guarantee everyone gets a chance of a shot on a meat animal as most often there are complete hunting virgins along and others who have only ever shot deer on these trips.
I have never bothered to pay for a private property trip myself other than these trips altho I might one day in the future to take me old Dad or young Son out.
I have literally lost count of how many first ever deer shot I have been present for both paid hunting and public land hunting.....that bit never gets old.😎

Nothing wrong with it at all. Some property owners charge a success fee to help with farm income. Call it what you like, trophy fee or access fee, up to you. Using a guide should simplify the process. Your morals will govern which type of arrangement you take in terms of a fence or free range. I personally don't agree one bit for the fenced option  and I doubt you would either.
I would be keen to do a guided trip one day but I would be wanting to pay for the guide and not the head and definitely not something that is fenced in. I personally have no interest in a trophy and am only after an animal for meat. I am relatively inexperianced as friend got me bit by the hunting bug shortly before buggering off up north so I have had to self learn (around young family commitments) so I would be interested in a guided experiance that I had to work for not a luxury trip. I dont actually know if this sort of deal exists but that is what I would be interested in.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it. At the end of the day, it's all about getting out into the fresh air and having fun. :) It could be a great way to learn tips/tricks from someone more knowledgeable too.
As far as being guided onto 'trophy' quality animals by a guide, and then writing about it for magazines etc - in that situation, I think the decent thing to do would be to credit the guide for being part of the equation. As it wasn't solely through your own efforts that you got onto the animal.
Well as someone in whangari I can't get to deer country often enough to learn where they are or are not Plus when i take my sons away I want them to get something.
I have done private land free range bordering DOC in 4 locations and the only time I have been unsuccessful was with a couple of mates when we did not hire a guide. Only located where the animals where on our last morning and it was regularly hunted
Have done 1 unguided behind the wire meat hunt with my sons. ( they trusted me not to shoot stags) Saw a number of animals which was great. 2x 2000 ah blocks with fallow and reds. Pricing was very reasonable.
As some one with limited time it makes sense to me.
Up here i have good private access to goats and I have learned their travel patterns so if i miss at one end i can intercept them on the other side of the valley.
Lots of people tell me about deer in northland but there are no available herds for the recreational hunter.
(possibly some fellow made it across the Kaipara to Potu peninsula and people talk about some in Russell forest but I have never meet anyone with first hand experience)

Where are you Pineapple? And no I don’t mean the rough end!:D
@BRADS ??
Cheers @berg243 - I will keep an eye out for when my social calendar (or my kids social calander) slows down a bit.
Don't have a problem with it. If you're short of time, want a good experience seeing animals, and can afford it then why not. Everyone hunts for different reasons, and you don't have to justify your reasons any more than I would...
Cheers guys,
Have never done it but looks like plenty available eh
Each to thee own, but AATH in our wilderness areas should be stopped . I cant believe it is allowed to happen.
This is why I find DOC and the government so stupid.
But then again I can see their side to a point. Because the animals are classed as pest and it is free control for them. This is why rec hunters will never get a fair shake until something is done collectively.
If we had hunting for foreigners set up like other places instead of giving everything away free then we would be getting somewhere.
Things like AATH could be stopped over night.

if people want to do aath on private land then go for it . but in the designated wilderness areas ? It must annoy trampers and climbers too . Its the fact that we are only allowed to walk into the wilderness areas except for the thar ballot and certain sites , to keep it as a " wilderness experience " , but then people can just fly in as they please and smoke over animals .
Not knowing what "AATH" was I googled it and got to the DOC website. Aerially Assisted Trophy Hunting.
The map of allowed areas seems to include pretty much all of the Sth Is except Fiordland ?! wtf ? Surely this should be more restricted.
To get a permit there's an application fee of ~$1800 & then some very nominal concession costs for flight landings and daily charges. So once a guide has got thru the initial application cost fee & bureaucracy its pretty much a free lunch.
If the punter is an overseas tourists I'd like to think there was a decent fee ($4 -500/day?) with the privilege of accessing our public land.
I have been on a few guided hunts on private property and have paid for the guiding etc. I have learnt a lot from the guide and do not consider this a waste. I would be unable to hunt this area without the guide, as due to the new ACC workplace laws, if anything was to happen to us then he is liable for it. By guiding all hunters on the property, he gets an income stream that would have not been there otherwise, he is able to control the safety aspect of behaviour on the property and reduce hazards, and as he is with the hunters he knows where they are and what they are doing so there is no issues around other hunter splitting up and getting into each others firing zone. It works well.
It is not the be all and end all, but it means I have a better idea of all these aspects of hunting when I go to hunt elsewhere. Especially as I did not grow up in a hunting household and only came into it after I left college.
What defines AATH.
Is that dropping a client and guide off on a suitable spot and then driving animals previously spotted to them with the helicopter?
yes i have ethical issues with that but I also know people who for health/mobility reasons can't manage much more that that. Possibly they would be better served by private land hunts with good quad bike access.
As a north islander since I was 10 with limited time, if I wanted to do a south island hunt I would seriously consider hiring a guide to increase my chance of success. On top of that if I was doing a tops hunt I would want to fly in both to save time and due to fitness joint issues. I could walk in to many areas but would be buggered the next day. Then on top of that I would not be able to carry a lot of meat, skin or head etc back out.
(i do a 250mtr climb and decent 1-2 times a week with the dog but it's not the same as a 1000mt climb with full pack and rifle etc)
having the option to be able to fly in to DOC land and take a guide for local knowledge with a party is important to me. Not fully understanding all the detail I do get the distinct feeling that some what to take away this option which in reality for me and many others is the only way we are going to get to expedience and hunt these areas.

I dont think that a helicopter as transport into and out of the hunting area is the same as AATH. AATH is where the helicopter is used for the hunt itself so that they dont have to walk far.
As mentioned, A guide can be of great help when you are in unfamiliar territory or dont have the luxury of repeated visits to get the "local knowledge" around an area.
ZQ Lewis...any guide worth his or her weight in dried goat poohs should be able to get you an animal by working around you abilities if you give them the time to do so/work out how to do it. being dropped off/picked up isnt an issue....its the "sheep dogging" of animals into your location for you to shoot that is the fly in ointment. drop you off on a ridge area
to camp and spend quite couple of days poking around in good areas SHOULD be able to fill your tag/freezer...no issue to then get guide to help out with recovery and call in whirly bird to scoot ya back to civy street.
as for guided hunting...no problem with it...shooting farm bred stag behind wire then spouting BS story with photos of how it was fair chase on public land isnt on...bit like buying a $2 whore then bragging about the hot chick you picked up at the pub....
Ive shot wild stag that jumped into a LARGE deer paddock to get at hinds....when I say large picture 5-600 hectares he wasnt fighting fair and had all the hinds in his harem untill we rectified the situation and let the stations breeding programme get back on track...was it hard yakka or "hunting"??? nope harvesting pure n simple. would I pay to harvest??? if needs be yes...but as yet havent seen the need. overseas trip yes definately to gain the access and knowledge but it would be fair chase and not canned .
Micky I think we are on the same page then.
Cheaper than a chopper flight sometimes and youre guaranteed to take home some meet so it’s a yes from me!

I looked into it for private land access for Chukar hunting. I could take a month off, head down south with a bunch of dogs and start from scratch on public land, looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack, or I could just pay for guided access on private land and better utilize my time and be amongst the action straight away on a species I have no experience hunting. It's a no-brainer.
As for shooting behind the wire animals, it's not for me. Would happily pay for genuine free range access to something I can't readily find.
Anyone know of any blocks incould pay for access and hunt respectfully with there rules but not be guided? Or maybe guided the first time? Cheers
