    gutted!

little yarn for ya, shot a real nice hind from 250 300m and couldn't find her, had a real long decent look too.. went back the next day before flying out and my brother found her. choice as, but she was a bit smelly and still warm under where she had been lying and her fur was pulling off real easy but went to work gutting and skinning her as we wanted to get as much meat as possible to the butcher, I had put two shots in her chest uphill and managed to cut her kidney in half and one through the lungs so she wouldn't have taken too long to pass away however the smell was pretty bad... butcher said she had bone taint and couldn't get any meat off her. I'm real gutted and real sad for the animal.. Name: IMG-20190623-WA0054.jpg

That's a bummer, at least you know she was dead and not laying around wounded.

It happens Blisters. It’s a shame though to have lost the meat.

Why fly when there is a perfectly good road in the background?

Mate, you'd worry me more if you felt nothing for the animal. A degree of empathy is a must for the hunter in my opinion.

Yeah that smell is a tell tale eh. I lost one that dropped on the spot but tumbled far and over the edge into a ravine in papa country. Was a stupid place to shoot it with hindsight. Man I was cross. Couldn't get down there safely on my own, let alone get out. Walked up the river next morning, which was mission in its own right, despite cold temps overnight the deer was blown up and very smelly. Doesn't take long, gotta get those guts out and cooled down pronto. Couldn't even bring myself to take it for dog tucker.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune @Blisters.

This raises an interesting question for me. I have very little sense of smell.

How to tell if the meat's no good, apart from obvious cues, like bloating and discoloration?

Not sure there are other ways to know. If it is still warm over night then I'd just not bother.

I have gotten bone taint from a pig during the day I shot it.

If you can't get the guts out quick even the coldest night will probably not make it possible to recover anything.

    That is a bugger.
I have done it a couple of times, the last one I shot right on dark and it fell down a rock shute into ravine hell, no way was I going down there to recover it in the dark with my young son so we were back at daylight. I boned out the hindquarters and backsteaks on the side of the hill, the side on the ground was still slightly warm but all the meat was fine other than some bruising from its tumble.
