This was soon confirmed with only about 10 deer seen over the whole trip, including down on the river flats and almost no fresh sign out on the tops or clearings.
We found piles of gut bags with fawns still in them, so WARO had been taking place for months before we were in there.
One of our party had been able to glass the tops on our block from a block next door and had counted about 30 deer out through the day on a previous trip about 3 years earlier.
What company did you fly in with?

If you watch 'The weekend mish' episodes on youtube you can actually hear the pilot say when he picks the lads up from one of the haast blocks that the area they were in had a hammering. Last bit of this video.

He would know, he works for the same outfit that is doing some of the WARO.

We shot a two decent stags on the coast this year, main divide blocks and a couple in open blocks. Saw and heard plenty.

The guys we spoke to who put in decent effort had similar results.

Seems to have been this way for most of the south island by the sounds. Certainly plenty of deer kicking around. Drove past the GOH during the roar and I've never seen the carpark for access to wills so full in years. Good to see people keeping the track open by making use of it after it sort of disappeared for a while there.

And those blocks will always be hit and miss Matt. You've probably done better seeing 10 than they have in years gone by anyway
