Thread: Harkness Hut roar week now available

Hi all
I had Harkness Hut booked for April 16 to 23 this year but unfortunately I cannot make it and the rest of the party have also decided to pull out. It is a good roar block with good hut and tracks (a few river crossings) to get around and cover some country. I have just cancelled with Helisika so if you are quick you might get it.

The rest of us are going in today for a week, so hopefully weather stays fine and the big boys have arrived at the party grounds. Could be a little corn flakey but better than being at home!

Hi all
Good to hear it didn't take long for someone to snap up the booking, hope they have a great trip. Just got out and it was an interesting week with three days of crap weather, however we got out and about and all three scored a sika. There were contacts each time we hunted for them, and around the 1000 to 1200 m asl mark was the most common altitude to find them. Just starting to gets their pads started and a few trees getting thrashed. I opened up some of the stream crossings that were closed in with toitoi to make travel a little easier as there has been no track maintenance in there since 2015. The new fireplace is easier to get going but because of the solid top plate takes at least an hour to get it hot enough to slowly cook, the old version had a lift out round plate that gave access to the flames and it cooked great, so maybe take an extra cooker to get your meals cooked in good time. The whio family is still hanging on in there, as are karearea (falcon), kaka, and kakariki. Caught a good sized trout for breaky as well. Hot barrels to all those who are still to hunt the roar, and be careful. I shot this monster on the last night, and he was in his bright summer coat, and the head was just to big to carry out. Pleased I have removed him from the gen pool.

Looks like “they” may have got the puberty blocker dosage wrong.

What a ripper! But, I must say it is a bit of a shame to see such a magnificent stag taken so early in the roar, without having had the chance to pass on his impressive genetics
