Heads up re Kasmir road access to Long View, Awatere, and Daphene Huts

Looks like they are preparing to log the pine blocks on either side of the road near the end of Kashmir road. The road has been in pretty poor shape for some time, but now it is even worse. I once got a Honda city to the road end (slowly), but now even in four wheel drive in the dry it's a chore.

Hopefully the current state will not be the final outcome. There is roading machinery parked quite close to the road in a couple of places, and the first bridge is being worked on as well. There is a sign near the start warning of logging trucks, but I still wouldn't want to meet one on some sections of the road (lots of reversing required by the smaller vehicle in all likelihood)!

I would suggest that any one planning on targeting this area for the next few months might want to plan for early morning or after 5pm to travel on this road, and employ a 4x4. If it ever rains this road will be porridge.

doesn't it mean they will grade the road and make access better when the trucks aren't on it?

The roads fine, they just did it up over the last couple days by the looks, but I still would avoid working hours once they start hauling I reckon. But there's no deer in there anyway so I don't kno why you'd go

Hey, I'd thought I'd ask you Kashmir road locals: what's the situation with the gully that runs up from the Daphne carpark - the one on the left-hand side as you grunt up the Daphne Hut track. All those grass faces on the south side and plenty of feed on the north side below the track, all threaded through with deer trails, but I watched it for 2 hours from the top on a perfect evening with a light easterly in my face late December and saw nothing. There was plenty of evidence up around the head that it's well used for long-range stake-outs. Does it get shot out every spring, and re-populates again each winter?

Hay Puffin. The whole area gets a lot of hunting pressure but there are a few deer in there. I bumped into 3 coming out of the next gully south when on the top at dawn in Feb. They are there but they are very shy.
