Far out, he didn't even ask for a spot just a push in the right direction. When i first joined this forum everyone was happy to give a little help to others, it doesn't need to be much just a few access points etc. I hope nzhs is not changing to be like another forum i know where anything you say or do is criticised.

If you want to take a quad bike with you, then go into the Rangitaiki DOC block on SH5. Access is a little way passed the pub.
There are animals there but best to park up on a high spot with a pair of binos and watch.
Remember to get your DOC permit first.

First leave the motor bike out of your hunts learn to walk first get to know the area well .You cant hunt with me because if you make a mistake, ill take your rifle

There's some disappointing comments on here. Every1 has to start somewhere so good on ya for asking, don't be put off by the negative comments it seems the internet can turn u into a pro hunter over night.

The spot X book is a good investment for getting the low down on new places to go and deerstalkers like others have suggested. Regarding the quad, they're cool fun and save the legs but I can guarantee ull come across more animals with out it.
When in new territory make sure u don't push it to hard and get misplaced..and think safe.

I saw your post this morning and my first reaction was similar too others. My first piece of advice would be lose the bike. Your'e young and presumably fit ? If your not fit - get fit ! I mean walking up to 15-20 Km's in steep country with another 20-30kg on your back. Learn to live out of your pack. Team up with someone of a similar mindset and just get fuckin hard and fit. Dont comprimise on this. It may save your bacon.
Join NZDA and get out with more experienced guys. Dont get hung up on shooting animals, For me its about the whole experience in the bush. If your in Auckland Taupo's three hours. You might as well drive 5 and get into some real hunting e.g The Kaweka Ranges.
Post up some of your experiences on here. Ask a lot of questions. If you PM me and are literate and polite I will have some spots worth checking out.

Hi Yeti, i started out just over a year ago, first thing i did was buy 'Spot X', as said previously it will give great advice on road ends and huts to hit for overnighters, i then joined Deerstalkers, again older members will mentor you with advice.....

there are NO short-cuts, the first 4-5 times i went hunting i didnt see, hear a thing....never mind fire a shot....its a big learning curve that im not even close to getting on the end off....get out there have fun, dont get discouraged if you see nowt

the reward when you put your first animal on the floor will overwhelm you....just keep going, disregard the jibes from the non-hunting community, there are loads of brilliant buggers on here who will help you along...just show a bit of self reliance and go for it!

make mistakes and learn from them, that first animal you get off your own planning and skill will mean a awful lot more that being 'led' to one......happy hunting mate
