That's great news.
As if they will listen and comply..... Not likely is my guess
But fingers crossed
Awesome , I wonder how many they have already destroyed ?
That won't stop a thing
Now we need a petition to get rid of Poto Williams for giving it the go ahead to start with.
It's an interim injunction with a case still to be heard, but a great gutsy move which I really hope brings some rationale to the debacle. Thankyou those who went to the high court, from me.
/\ /\ What he said - once these are gone I don't expect we'll see them replaced.
Exactly - no way will DOC upset local Iwi and rebuild the huts. Under this government DOC has proven to be totally incompetent. Bloody disgraceful that it even happened in the first place and be interesting to watch the possum, rat, pig and deer numbers skyrocket now that local Iwi seem to have full control
More pigs and deer so great for hunting I hear you say but no,no. Invited guests only according to Tuhoe
Remove pest control.
Then put case forward for 1080.
I’ve already heard doc telling Tuhoe that the reason pig numbers are low in Te Urewera is because possum numbers are high and possums eat flowers which would’ve become berries, and that pig numbers bounce back higher than ever a couple of years after 1080.
I've wondered about this. Do the pigs that survive the drops get a food bonanza from the corpses for a while, helping them get into peak breeding condition? Ditto for helicopter culls. Lots of food just lying around. Then the regrowth in the bush provides food for their piglets. Population boom results.
Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.
This really isn't a DOC issue as such - it's the wrinkles that were never thought about with the co-governance arrangement. DOC are the 'supporting partner' and can't overrule, but on the other hand the other partner isn't supposed to either. The minister isn't required to rubber stamp decisions or give approval as that would be a Crown approval which isn't required under the co-governance agreement. It's a brave new world...
I understand that assets were shared under the agreement?
Back in the 80’s we spent a week in Urewera with a Doc ranger and he said back then that the pig numbers in Urewera were cyclical and built up over 5-7 yrs then dropped again. Was also to do with pigs moving around through different areas n
According to Urewera Board 29 huts gone
29 HUTS GONE
In accordance with a High Court order, Te Uru Taumatua and Te Urewera Board have provided a complete list of the huts that have been demolished or removed from Te Urewera.
The 29 huts demolished or removed are: Kanohirua; Hanamahihi Hut; Manaohou Right Branch Hut; Mangapouri Hut; Ngahiramai Hut; Old Waiawa Hut; Otanetea Hut; Takarua Hut; Waiawa Hut; Apiti Hut; Casino Hut; Hapenuia Hut; Mangaawai Hut; Mangamako Hut; Ngatamatea Hut; Ohane Hut; Ohora Hut; Onepu Hut; Papanui Hut; Waihua Hut; Waikokopu Hut; Waipotiki Hut; Wharekahika Hut; Tawhiwhi Hut; Waikare Junction Hut; Central Waiau Hut; Manuoha Hut; Whakatakaa Hut and Whanganui Hut
Sh-t!
That sucks. Went into Waiawa and kanuhirua last year
Such a shame.
Ohane was the one and only Urewera hut I've stayed at and hunted out of. Wild country and lots of animals. Very nice open fireplace to have banter around. Remember stumbling onto an old Pa site on top of a ridge. Cool place. I'll sadly probably never visit again.
That's so sad. The Central Waiau was in great condition and had a brand new fire place.

And let me guess the outcome of this
1) Everyone will say its someone else's fault
2) Nothing will happen. even though they've breached the high court order
I thought at the time that a court order wouldn't stop it.
Not surprised at all.
Wild pigs in Te Urewera are cyclic - seems to be 6-7 yr cycles - after 1080 yes pig numbers increase ( no 1080 in Te Urewera )- likely not due to eating carcasses - quite some research suggests pigs can detect 1080 and avoid it - but a lot more feed around for them especially fattening berries - hinau Nikau Tawa etc - and no hunting pressure for awhile -Tuhoe attitude against 1080 is very firmly entrenched so don't expect it there anytime soon - but other powers will be watching the state of those important water catchments such as the Whakatane - Waiau - Ruakituri - Waimana - Hangaroa - likely they will not allow them to deteriorate to badly but a few years away yet - my big concern is access
Thats the issue though isn't it Barry. TUT, whilst claiming that the park is available for anyone to use, realistically want to exclude everyone except tuhoe. There is a rotten undertone to what they say, and then what actually happens is different. This burning the huts is just part of that. It's an easy way to exclude people and actively discourage them from coming to the Ureweras.
I know of confrontations, have even experienced them myself. Not recently like since the park was handed back, so its nothing new.
You couldn't leave your vehicle anywhere whilst you went for a hunt, still can't as I understand it. It will be burnt out when you get back.
shit behaviour.
I doubt I will ever go back there.
No please go back - its a neat place to hunt - the bush hunting is the best in North Island - with the high deer numbers even better likely - just plan for a problem - leave an old fart to guard camp or vehicle -don't let TUT get away with the bullshit - we were guaranteed access under this new management - then use it - any problems feed it straight back to DOC -TUT or your local MP - or if real bad Police -dont give up
The problem pointed out by Tac a1 is that its been like that since forever. I remember having to make sure we left someone with the Tramping club van in the 1980's:oh noes:.
Letting the authorities/pollies know has resulted in...nothing at all.
A mate gave up possuming in the Ureweras as he got sick of dragging his arse up and down that steep countryside (good sized skins mind you) all day long only to get back to the hut and find someone sleeping in his sleeping bag, and another one cooking up a feed of his rationed out for a one-month-stay tucker.
In the end he asked the NZFS what huts could not be accessed by horse...and went there. But it wasn't long till he found 2 legged sign on the tracks and less food in his keep than when he left the hut that morning:omg:
A mate of mine had 300 traps stolen in there.
i went up the kowhai river in kaikoura. went hunting and came back to find our food was being eaten, which was on the mattress with our packs. "we thought it was communal"
we gave them a stern lecture and they pissed off real quick! had to cut our hunt short because of that!
True XR. There's a level of lawlessness that remains in there to this day.
Telling the cops or TUT would result in sweet FA being done.
Used to be that if you had some contacts with some of the elders, you were ok. The Biddle and Tamihana families were who we used to deal with, and they were good people. Think they are all gone now.
Did they burn the Te Pua hut down does anyone know?
Te Pua not on the list Tac. Yes it was good when Sonny Biddle and his mob were around. I remember dropping into his place one xmas and was told he was away on holiday. I asked where? The answer was his holiday home a few kms up the Waiiti River lol The other holiday home was Tawhana.
Yeah Dad used to have a bit to do with Sonny and his family. Used to see them on the way up the Waimana on horse back a bit too.
Court ruling doesn’t seem to have done much. 8 more gone this week.
DOC dont seem to know which group of Maoris to bend over backwards to keep happy, the people that want to burn down the huts that DOC own, or the Maori people that dont want to burn down the huts that DOC own.
DOC obviously has to keep some Maoris happy somewhere but this is driving them crazy with illogic. How can they be virtuous if some Maori dont like what they are doing for other Maori? DOC don't know how this happened. They are very unhappy.
The three white office chicks at the DOC office will be making up a waiata song using the words "waka", "whare", ""arporo"" and "taonga" that they feel will make them look better, and hopefully solve the whole problem.
Do court injunctuon mean nothing?
