A mate who grew up in Scotland told me they used the blade of grass between the thumbs whistle to do deer counts in the Highlands (his dad was a gamekeeper). It supposedly sounds like a fawn in distress, and brings the hinds running.
I tried it once when there was a young hind grazing on the neighbouring property, it worked well, she came trotting up the hill and over the boundary fence. I suspect it may only work at certain times of the year (when fawns are around), iirc it was December when I tried it.
