Thread: Hind and fawn calls - how to do it?

This year I'm wanting to change up my hunting techniques for this roar so I can give my son a chance at his first deer.

I reckon a well placed hind or fawn call may do the trick on occasions when the stag isn't playing ball, but I'm struggling to find examples of how to actually make the calls. Does anyone have any examples, either on YouTube, or a general description as how to make the respective calls?

Hind calls are like mew. The Duleys use it sometimes in there shows

Hold your nose closed, make a nasally meee as you are letting go of your nose

Go and park up next to the fence of a deer farm when the farmer has separated the fawns from the hinds and you will hear a shitload of both calls. If that is not an option then a fawn sound is a short Meh about the same pitch as a lambs bleat. Doesn’t matter what you sound like, you can’t really fuck it up. Don’t over do it.

I reacon that call would get me 20 percent of animals in the bush.
Let it out whenever I hear an animal starting to break.
Iv even let one out when dislodging a big rock in a nice area to cover the noise.yearling replied.got shot.

The other useful one (probably more so than the mew and easier to do) is the matriarch hind 'bark' which is both an alarm and a challenge. If you hear that, you'll know it and just reply in kind. As noted, don't overdo it. Often it will confuse the old bag who will give another bark - this holds the mob for a short while anyway while the old dear tries to work out what's up. I've had a barking match with one old trout on the other side of a big fern clump about 5m away - "why aren't you shooting it" asks me mate in a panicky tone. 'I can't bloody see it in the scope, it's too close!!!" A lesson in a 4x scope in the close bush, that. I could see it by eyeball but couldn't resolve it in the scope - I realised later I was looking at individual hairs not a deer and if I'd just looked alongside the barrel or the scope I was close enough to nail the thing anyway... As we say, lessons learned.

the fawn call - use that to stop deer that are moving away in order to get a shot at them - not really for a stag in the roar - the hind call is what you want - very useful for the stag that just wont show himself but yup he is right there - can provoke him into moving - or turn him around if he is moving away

Fawn call is the best kept secret in the roar. My son of 9 years old shot 4 stags in the roar 2 years ago and 3 were the result of a fawn call.
