Homestead block - Masons bay, Stewart Island

    Hi all,

Looking for a little advice - me and a mate have Homestead block in Masons Bay booked in February.

My mates old man is coming along and he's has been to Stewart Island a dozen or so times(!) so he's pretty knowledgable. But if anyone had any tips specific to this particular spot it would be appreciated.

I used the search function but it didnt seem to turn up too much.

I understand this is a hunting block without ready fishing access so just focused on hunting tips

It's the first time down there for two of us (party of four) so just happy to have a look around really but if we can knock over and animal that would be amazing...

Also any special tips for gear to take, over and above the obvious, also greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Macca

Expect to see a lot of trampers at that time of year (depending on what is happening with Covid)

Take some bait of the rat traps (I'm sure you'll find the start of a line behind the hut), they are an excellent place to go for a quiet walk with the rifle, might as well deal with the rats if you are there a while.

Fishing would off the middle of the beach, 15-20mins walk you would need a decent surfcaster.

Find a nice spot with wind in your face with a bit of a view over some feed, sit and wait.
