hopeful?
Hey you Cantabs.
I'm flyingin to chch tomorrow to pick up a vehicle.
Thought I'd hang around for maybe a week and while I'm in the SI I'd take the opportunity to experience some different country
and try and see some different animals.
Posting here in the hope that someone with some local knowledge may be keen for a bit of a mission.
Nothing too hardcore but maybe a night or 2 out on the hill?
Mt Peel has been suggested as a good location to go for a look so at this stage thats my destination.
open to any suggestions.
cheers

well if you going to go to mt peel... stop by firestation in peel forest and get photo or two of the thar in paddock beside it..and get your eye into what they look like. there has been a vechile parked at rawl gully entry point all weekend....fark the fellas will have been cold up the hill...saw no vechiles at boundary creek entrance... these are both entry points up the rangitata vally onto the mt peel sort of area.
I can put you onto some of our big wallabies if keen for a walk...
big hairy goats dont interest me at all so no use to you there.

Looks like you picked a good week for it, blue skies and ripper frosts. If its tahr youre after, the Hakatere conservation area had 2 helicopters in for a few days last week, apparently tahr culling.
-
Thanks for the replies.
Wallies sound like fun, haven't had a go at them before.
Hakatere looks interesting but yea, main attraction would be "wooly goats"
so maybe pass on that,cheers.

anyone seen or heard from Lurch since 14;00 today???? he is overdue here in Geraldine and Im starting to be concerned...
-
just got PM he ok in chch but has lost phone etc..... hope to catch up tomorrow ...
-
going for a wet walkies tomorrow, hopefully will manage to tip over a wallaby or two.....
-
Well it was WETTER THAN A SHAG GOING FISHING..but we went anyway... trudged up and over top of a mountain,Lurch managed to blow a quarry into side of mountain just under first wallaby and then redeemed himself by smashing over the 2nd one...he may have been slightly overgunned wit ha 30wsm blazer topped with nightforce..but I averaged things out a bit with cheap single shot 222 topped with a fixed 3x loopy yo uwould struggle to fine two more opposite rifles
I did snot over another wally while Lurch was cutting the first one up,then shot another soon afterwards..that was it.. some tricky decents on slippery rocks, met another hunter who had come from Timaru for a look...had got to river and decided to turn back..he had just walked back 3-400 mtrs up hill when we met him...I said Im going to continue creek cant be that bad.... it was swift, brown and between knee and thigh..but I forded it fine and the other two followed possibly realizing Im a crazy old bugga while doing so.
let young Nathan carry on ahead and Lurch n I plodded down to wagon just cruising along enjoying the day..wet as a wet thing.
a good day out and nice to meet another forumite
