165 SST is a more stout bullet (and for that matter the interlock has the same sort of relationship which I am told is the same-ish pill just without the plastic tip). I saw similar issues with the 150 and went up a weight to the 165. No more of that issue so far... Reported to be a much more reliable pill, I'll let ya know if I have one that doesn't do the mahi.
I know the most common loading in .308 in NZ is the 150gr, but when I started having issues like this I hit the web and had a look about a lot of different places and one outfit had a comparison between a few different caliber factory rounds for weight, then sectioned the bullets in those loads. The 150gr .308 was comparatively more lightly built in the jacket and also seemed to me to be relatively short for it's length which is why I went to the 165gr in the same caliber and brand as my 'everything' bullet.
