    Mud and rotten vegetation is the fabric killer.

    If it is just dusty, I brush it off, get rid of all the seeds, twigs etc.

    If it is filthy, submerge it in water, use a hard brush, keep rinsing till it is clean, then hang up to air dry.

    Thats my routine anyways
