How far away was the last deer you shot???

will see if can make this a poll.... all this talk of how accurate a HUNTING rifle needs to be..sort of needs some relevance. you "best guess" of range is near enough for me...
this sort of linked with "dinner plate challenge" SHOULD give relevance in spades.

    Depends where one hunts.

    last one was 220m (rangefinder)

the one before was around 75

    the one before around 50.

I believe a generalnpurpose hunting rifle needs to be capable of delivering accurate (sub moa) and deadly (with regards to energy) shots out to 300m.

I clicked 0-25 for the last deer (it was a stag at 10m in thick bush), but the two before that were 80m and 200m. The results will be interesting though.

About 8m in the bush haha. Then last week my boss shot one at 350m and 270m with my same rifle. Had also lined up on two around 420m but they walked off before a good shot was available.

From memory a survey a few years ago done by deerstalkers concluded that 80 plus % of deer were shot under 100 m certainly under 200m. Maybe because it's there we over gear, over gun, and over optic ourselves up the wazoo to mostly achieve the same result as an open sighted rifle firing an "antique" cartridge.
Forgot to add. 121 paces 243, fixed 4x scope

I kept a tally over the last trip’s deer & goats as part of an informal look at whether or not we are making any difference on these particular properties (the feeling is definitely yes, we are).

With the .308, the last deer shot (by my son) was 120m.

The trip average for that rifle was 160m.

The Browning BLR / Aimpoint red-dot also accounted for several animals, average range being ~50m.

The average range I am shooting animals has significantly reduced in the last couple of years now that I’ve switched to spot & stalk versus longer-range snipes. Four years ago, the average range would have comfortably been >350m. But the number of deer shot was dramatically less!
