Knocked over my first sparrow with a kettie (sling shot) at around 6, since then most free time was spent running around the bush barefoot with some form of weapon be it a sling shot, homemade bow and arrow, slug gun or firearm.
Evenings were spent pouring over hunting and firearm magazines.
Only time I wasn't hunting was when I was fishing, then I went to uni and beer and women took my interest for a few years until about 24 and hunting came back to the fore!
Started in the UK with a 22 air rifle, dad was in the paras, was going to follow him big time after he let me have a go with his FN FAL, then 'the troubles' kicked off in N Ireland, dad gave me the big 'no way, son' speech
although pissed off, i thank him every day in my own way....spend some time in the US, glock 9mm, AR 15....heaven, now im in godzone i have my FAL and im finally living out some long held dreams & ambitions!!!!

shot my first deer when I was 15 with my old mans 303 and I,m still hunting 45 years on
59 this year. Rabbit shooting in Canterbury High country at 11-12 Yrs with .22 bolt action. Thar & Chamois hunting in Arthur's Pass area when 15-16 with 1942 Long Branch, Lee Enfield #4 Mk 1* fully wooded .303. (still have it). Went to sea (RNZN) for 32yrs and just recently started hunting again in NI using Marlin 7mm08 and Game bird hunting with Maverick 88 Pump with 28" barrel for the birds & 18.5" barrel for bunny busting. Looking for access in BoP area to rabbit &/or wallaby shoot. Kaimai Ranges are like Queens street during the roar so would like to know more about Kaimanawa/Kaiweka areas for deer hunting. Any area info much appreciated. Cheers
