Interesting that there is a lot of "one up the spout" going on. Either I guess to increase capacity or in readiness. And Im guessing on "half cock"?

I sometimes do it when in complete readiness, but I have never liked it. I feel safest when there isn't one in the chamber. Half cock and using the safety makes me uneasy.

Yep we all have our opinion on the subject but it has been done to death on several occassions and become a broken record.
At any rate it looks to be still asleep except for my poking it a bit.

Even back in your meat hunting days, Tahr? My recollections of the late 70's/ early 1980's was that practically everyone operated with one up the spout, and on half-cock?

Yeah, did when I was younger. Hunting by myself. I think I probably went off it when I started taking my 2 lads out and hunting with other people.

@Tahr I can only comment on my case but
Only consider one up the spout as one in chamber if I think I'm close to something. Not on half cock, bolt could be pulled back. Most rifles aren't designed for a half cock but that's been done to death previously
If I really think I'm going to see something or I'm sitting down waiting then it will be fully closed and safety on
If I move out of the area I'll unload and close bolt on empty chamber.
Easy to do on the push feeds but a PITA on the mausers.
If it's an area that I would think I have heaps of time and animal wouldn't hear me, I'd only load just before shot.
    That's me anyway
