Just a couple of questions out of curiosity. How much ammo would you typically take with you on a hunt, and how much on a pest control mission?
If you are going by @Tahr standards you take a truckload and probably a spare barrel or two. :D
I take 10 on a regular day hunt gives you a few to play with if you need a re sight if you give the gun a good thump .
If you are going by Olympic marksman champion title holder standards (as many here are), you take only one round and probably a spare camera or two to record yourself over and over again :D
Typica deer hunting foray I take 10 to 12 rounds max. Most deer I have shot in one day is two. Most rounds I have used in one day deer hunting is six.
The only pest control I have done is culling goats. I would usually carry up to 100 rounds. On a very few days I have used them all but more typical has been 40 to 50 rounds.
All the above getting about by shanks pony. No bike or 4WD vehicle use except to access the area.
For an evening deer hunt I take about 8. If things go wrong you can actually get through a few.
A day deer hunt, a dozen.
Pests - like everyone probably - as many as I think I will need. Nothing worse than running out. Depends on the context but I take up to about 80. You can churn through it pretty quick.
Usually about 10-12. If I get into trouble and need to attract attention, having only a couple or 3 may not do the trick.
Depends. If it's couple of days rabbit shooting near Otago at least a brick of 22lr
I take 4 in the mag and three spare in the daypack
Most day or half day hunts 12 rounds.
That's 4 in the gun and 8 spare.
I have 2 of the 8 spare in my fleece, one in each chest pocket so they don't rattle together.
For duckshooting if I'm jump shooting 2 boxes, paddock shooting from a blind or opening weekend I just bring a slab
Day hunt - 10 in an old WWI pouch on the belt, 5 in the mag.
Had a situation years ago where we split into 2 parties (and lost sight of each other, don't tell the FSA) and on returning to the agreed meet up point on dark the other pair were not there.
Did the 3 shot routine and ended up backtracking back a few ks to where we thought the sound of their return shots came from and managed to make voice contact. They were bluffed so decided to spend the night there, we went home and returned the next morning.
The 3 shot routine chewed thru a fair bit of the ammo we were carrying.
For pest control, well the sky is the limit, depending upon your pest and the quantity of them.
I typically carried 5 in the mag, my WWI pouch of 10 and another purpose made leather pouch on my belt that took the inside of a 20 round factory box. Back then they were partitioned cardboard so no rattle.
If out deer hunting take 20 rounds, old habits die hard. Pest control day shoot, up to 100 rounds. If more than one day I carry 200+ (223). Nothing worse than running out of ammo when on walkabout.
As Zimmer states above, 3 shot routine chews through ammo.
20 is not a bad number if you can fit it and it's not to heavy.
Mainly for signaling if the worst happens.
I did land SAR for few years and a string of 3 shots every 15 mins certainly gets people attention if it's needed.
Latley Ive been taking 8 round 4 in rifle an 4 in belt. A pack of 20 wouldnt go astray in pack for siginaling. Usually take 100 rounds when possum shooting for the night
Got about a dozen left of the ammo I sighted the 8x57. If just a day type trip from camp or hut or just a day hunt, Mag full and one up the spout if I can be bothered trying to slip the extractor is either 5 or 6. I don't see that many deer.
Only got 4 rounds left for the 416 but that's 3 in the mag and one up the spout. That's a different thing altogether though.
Not really the tool for pest destruction although I'd imagine if I loaded up some 400gr solids I could shoot 3 or 4 if I lined them up lol
Bush and tops hunting, 5 rounds up the spout and 8 spare. I wll never forget dropping a round in brush in the tops, and needing one more round to finish a poorly hit deer. Trying to save grams shrinks the brain at times.
5 rounds up the spout! Sounds all go!!
Normally for a deer or tahr hunt between a morning or up to 3 days I'll take 10 rounds.
For a day on wallabies usually 40-50 rounds.
Interesting that there is a lot of "one up the spout" going on. Either I guess to increase capacity or in readiness. And Im guessing on "half cock"?
I sometimes do it when in complete readiness, but I have never liked it. I feel safest when there isn't one in the chamber. Half cock and using the safety makes me uneasy.
n = number of expected animals.
Total rounds = (n+1) x 2
For hunting I normally bring 8 + 1 snap cap (to keep junk out of the chamber) because that's what fits in the case.
On a trip after a meat animal or two i take a magazine full and a couple of spares.
If I am hunting rabbit around the farm here in the manawatu , I take two 10 round mags for the 10/22 and one up the spout.
Very rarely do I use all the ammo I carry.
On a day hunt ( to get one meat animal) I only take enough to fill the built in magazine (4 rounds). If you can't get something with that then either your rifle is not shooting straight or you are taking shots you probably shouldn't.
Ammo is expensive these days.
Hunting with a centrefire - 10 as that is what the elastic butt ammo thingamy holds. Pest control with a centrefire back in the days when I was trusted with a semi automatic- at least a couple of thirty round magazines. Pest control now that I don’t have a semi automatic centrefire, an overly ambitious box of 20.
Grocery hunting 3. Multi day hunt 10. Goat hunt 100
Lately it's been three arrows in the rack. In old days a couple of socks full in 223 or 60 rounds of 270. Just day hunt for meat half a dozen.
these days 12 rounds when out for a fallow- but old culling days East Coast sheep Stations we carried up to 150 rounds .222 depending on goat numbers -some of the aerial goat shoots we did we had 3-4000 rounds of .223 and buck shot just so we did not run out - but numbers of goats were damn high on some blocks - we shot Makomako station at Tokomaru bay when it went into pines and took 3500 goats of in about 3 weeks - biggest one day tally on there was I think 120 odd - killer block in summer damn hot
Previous wallaby trips mate took an deep south ice cream container full so.. 2 liters.
As many as unthink ull need plus 10
Big night spotlighting on roos 30/ person
Camels 5 in mag plus 5
Rabbits 50
Pigeon / rats with pcp 2 tins 500 shots
Rabbits down here, you need 50 pkts not 50 rds.Well bricks if you driving around for a few nights.
@ trout I'll pay on the brick on rabbits in this place
Went past paddock today , must have had over 100 in 50x50m looked like gulls next to a fish factory
Couldn't believe the density, never-ending seen rm that dense on golf course greens , was at about 1900 not even dark yet...
In the name of safety I don't take any rounds with me. If I see a deer I go home and get a round but so far every time I've gone back the deer has gone ;)
Years ago (45yrs) in the Twizel area you coud drive around the canels where i worked.Paddocks would have thousands in them, you could count up to 15-20 blacks rabbits, odd white hare.Theyd all sit back about 200yds from the roads, just bloody thousands of them.Youd get sick of shooting them,so many more would pop up.
6 rounds, plus 2 subsonic rounds for finishing shots if required. Just trying to get rid of the subsonics really. I'm goat hunting rather than culling. I tend to take 1 - 4 animals.
