Thread: How much camo is too much?

What's the thoughts on camo? New hunter wanting to get set up to go on a few hunts with guys I've just met. Prefer SI open spaces to forests. Don't want to be the tool with no clue but also pretty bloody dumb to turn up with useless kit.
Been told head-to-toe camo is best but also "Just go for green or brown stuff, mate" so keen to get more opinions. Cheers.

The way I look at it is whatever you hunting doesnt wear camo and they are hard enough to spot without it. More just dull browns and greens seem to work usually your movement is what will get you spotted

If your toothbrush is camo...its time for an intervention.

If you're just getting into it then don't overthink it. Get some basics that are relatively cheap to start with, camo or not. Once you know what sort of hunting you end up getting into (terrain, seasons, etc) then you'll have a better idea of what to spend your money on.

I feel weird wearing camo, and generally don't see the point of it. Just a way for hunting brands to sell more kit. Far too much overseas tacticool influences coming into the local NZ hunting scene. It might help you blend in to the Mai Mai for duck shooting but for deer, goats etc I don't think it's necessary.

My feelings too, muted greens/browns etc. The human figure "standing/walking" upright sticks out like dogs balls in the landscape, no amount of camo hides it

And if you have white skin your hands and face stick out the most

Just go to the Warehouse and pick up some Back Country brand green farm fleece; cheap and lasts well

Apart from duck/goose shooting camp clothing is a good way of parting hunters from their cash. Even some of the good looking stuff reflects UV light so not much use for much anyway.

Wearing a $500 camo jacket doesn't make you a better hunter.Just sun faded old brown greenish grayish clothing will do.Your white face and the back of yr white hands,deer will see a k away easilly.So early mornings late evenings,cover up a bit.Walk very slow on bush edges,stop and a look around lots.Dont have a white hanky hanging out of yr pocket.Deer will spot you.Good luck.

So much this, I have some dull grey/brown fingerless gloves. I notice the difference when hunting without them, animals seem to pick you up quicker. You might keep your body still but your hands will flick around and stand out.

How the hell thousands of 1960's and 1970's KIWI deer hunters managed to tip over millions of deer is beyond me, given that they all wore not a skerrick of camo...

Dull green, or black and red checked, or blue and black checked woollen swandris were clothing of the day. And wet weathers gave the deer a 500m head start...cause that's how far away you could hear us coming

You don't need any camo. The deer will hear and smell you long before they see you

What ever fits and is comfortable for me , you can tell I dress myself .

Does camo help make you harder to identify by eye? Yes. Do you need to it be successful hunting? No.
