I cant afford one of those fancy rifles with a bolt, just have to settle for my single shot rifle. does the job though
Back in the day when I was paid piss poor bought the '42 'smelly' 303, bought the excellent swanny which is still going 44 years later...altho the feckn thing is getting smaller, (should take it back and complain eh.,)...that year 1971 traded the old scouting kapok sleeping bag for a good kiwi made one with hollofil the first off the rank...!!!! Jeez even I'm too old (good old 1946 vintage) but noone of my gear has let me down ever...
Spend what I can when I can really, have discussed this with friends before, a trip in the mountains can look like:
Pack: $400
Boots: $400
Rain jacket: $250
Thermals: $200/300
Gaiters: $40
Food: $30
First Aid Kit: Free/ $1000 (I won this for being top in my first aid course haha)
Bivy bag: Gifted
Etrex: Gifted
Sleeping bag: Gifted
Gloves: $10 (They're warm and waterproof but too small)
Sunglasses: Gifted
Toiletries: $20ish?
Camera: $300 or $400 depending which one I take
Range finder: Gifted
Cooking equipment: $100-ish
Blaze top: Gifted
Survival gear: $40-ish
Most of my gear is second hand though haha, and only my boots/rain jacket and pack are recent purchases. Everything else can be up to 15+ years old!
And since I don't have a gun of my own I usually borrow and chip in for ammo :)
So all and all my first aid kit is my most expensive with pack falling in behind. Which is what I think is fair considering what they are used for, and what I want out of them.
For clothing that isn't outer shells I hate spending more than $80 on.... And I take ages to replace thermals, so most of the stuff doesn't fit any more (baggy/loose) and has holes in it all haha. I've bought some mint gear for $20 off 1-day before and will search through as many bargains as I can! Boots I definitely didn't want to skip the quality on them at all, I want at least a decade of use out of them - hard use!
How much do I spend on gear, none if I can help it.I'm a tight arse pensioner lol.
And so it goes, we buy within our means, and some of us beyond them, all in all it creates the same result... freezer full with luck, muscles sore, sleeping with a satisfied grin on ya mugs.
