Stick with the 270, load it with a 110 ballistic tip, and watch those long range goats fall like morning rain, but avoid the light weight remmington , don,t fall for the sales talk of the Tikka Sako followers of fashion shooters, get your self a finnbear or cf2, both will kill more than you will see, and save yourself a fortune

My pick is that since he is a student looking for his first centre fire he will not be reloading at this stage so after something he can readily get ammo off the shelf at a reasonable price.

Reloaders are doing a Howa Ranchland blued rifle package that is threaded for $699 in 7-08. Comes already threaded with Nikko gameking 3-9x40 scope, bases and ring mounts.
For your $700, this is probably the best you are going to do buying new.
For $895 you could have the stainless version of the same rifle or their 6.5x55 stainless Hougue stocked package.
Any of these will give you a good start and are a much better option than the 710 you originally looked at.
If you can stretch the budget then you will obviously open up more and better quality options but the ones I've mentioned should start you on the right track.

They're a cheap rifle, and need a little work to get the accuracy as the factory action fitting to the stock is poor (being nice describing that). Since you're in Morrinsvill, that's not so far from where I am, so we could meet up for a couple of walks
cheers peril 787bould be good to get a bit of experience with someone else

there will be enough good advice given on this forum to leave you choices.
Isn't their a 6.5 tikka about for $780 or such with rings, he may sell cheaper.
load a nosler 120gr bt and your ready for most stuff.
$800 absolute max mate only 16 so more worried about my parents disowning me rather than a divorse. mostly hunting kaimais and around there and the odd farm with goats. cheers

My problem is recoil . 6.5x55 is about the best option for power ,recoil , and accuracy a guy could hope for.
mines 120 years old , shoots moa ,
The 96 action needs the lock time sped up and the trigger touched up with a file but other than that its one of the finest rifles ever made.
ill never sell it and doubt ill ever break it.

It's in the 2014 catalogue that they send out.
Had a quick look online on my phone and can't see it either so probably worth calling them on the phone.

Mate its your first rifle not your last.
You will sell it later and move on to something nicer later on.
Just Buy anything from trademe bigger than a .243 with a 4 power scope or better and go hunting.
