for fucks SAKE !!! Every fucking year !!!
When is this shit going to end !!!
Bloody roar :(
note to self the roar is a good time to stay at home and drink lattes
Check out the seven basic rules in my signature block Raymond. One of them had to be broken for this to occur. It is a sad thing when something like this occurs because in my view it did not need to happen.
yup you are right there Rushy but this is the time of year the once a year hunters come out
and dont abide buy the 7 basic rules becasue they obviously have the " it wont happen to me " attitude
Ummm where does it say he's been shot? Police report a hunter killed, could have fallen down a bank and broken his neck but because the word 'hunter' is used everyone is ASSUMING he's been shot.
well thats a very good point @Walker
Shit that's where I hunt. Scary. If I hear anything I'll poat
I got two words for you..... "Personal responsibility"
Do you blame the police for every road death as well ?
Or maybe you are in favour of the simplest solution: just ban all firearms. Or possibly the expense of annual psychological evaluations for all firearms owners ?
All the reports are saying is a hunter has died. Nothing about how.
There are a ton of mineshafts in the area that I am surprised no one has gone awol into yet.
This happens bcoz people dont follow the instructions.. they need to change the attitude and seriously understand that there are no compromises when hunting.. you need to adhere to all safety measures outlined be it fire arms or bush craft..plus use some common sense.. Just saw another incident on stuff
Father and son hunters rescued - national | Stuff.co.nz
On the other thread about this guy, he got shot in the chest.
Unfortunately it was a firearms accident..

Not Good !!
Same old shit different year unfortunately. You only have to see some of the attitudes on here from time to time to realise there are still plenty of
dickheads who should not have firearms licences.....
Shot by someone from another hunting party according to this report:
Man, 25, shot dead by hunter in Southland - National - NZ Herald News
Went out for a stalk yesterday got to the car park too many trucks parked up for the catchment I wanted to go into so off to option B ;) Result no one else parked there so headed off in confidence
Further on pushed through a large cobweb right across my access track more confidence
I already have "personal responsibility"...those two words should be aimed at a far greater audience.
I don't blame the police for every death on the road...they already blame themselves for that.
A psychological evaluation, maybe not yearly, but at least every ten years would go a long way towards weeding a lot out.
And no, I am not against the owning of firearms but many wankers are making the powers-that-be see it that way.
The police gave up their participation in the issuing of driving licenses and had agencies do it. I believe the same should be done for firearm licenses.
A firearms licence is the only license [apart from marriage] where the person wanting one never has to handle the object that a licence is needed for...you want a pilots license, you will fly a plane, you want a drivers licence, you will drive a vehicle...you want a firearms licence, you must have a gun safe...umm what.
I don't see fuckwits on a daily basis, but I see enough...I see a person crossing my land with a fire arm, I call out "Oi you"...the first thing he does is lift his firearm to his shoulder so he can view me through his scope [or at least I hope that is all he is doing]. Two guys approach my house, both carrying firearms...they stop 50 metres out and one holds both guns while the other approaches the house...why cant they leave the fucken guns in the car.
I don't think changing the agency is going to achieve anything unless there is a substantial change in the law, the regulations and the process.
The thing is that with most firearm uses outside of hunting, it is pretty much self-policing. If you join a pistol club and act like a idiot on the range, you will very quickly get told to pack your bags, and same for most other sporting codes.
With hunting you have guys going out once a year, guys hyped on buck-fever etc. No way that I can see how you can regulate it. My view is that if we had the same amount of deaths / accidents on target ranges, pistol clubs and clay fields, the relevant associations would have stepped in long ago.
Only way I can see forward is to make it mandatory to belong to something like NZDA (if your intended firearm use is hunting). For them to radically change their approach to safety training and vetting, and to make that part of the process of obtaining a hunting license. That and a huge change in attitude from the average guy going out there to hunt, where it changes from the current macho bullshit attitude to one where you are man enough to come down like a ton of bricks on any mate that does something stupid or unsafe, to make "safe" practises the rule, rather than something that is seen as girly or unnecessary.
Unfortunately I do not see this happening, and fear we will be having the same debate next year, and the year after...
R.I.P mate, I always hate hearing about this. People are just too keen to yank that trigger.
Don't forget to wear your UN blue and yellow guy's, though it won't stop some shooting at movement.
it was NOT an accident. someone from another hunting party with a gun lined up on his chest and made a conscious decision to pull the trigger ie a deliberate shot.
an accident is if someone fell over and the gun got slammed and fired.
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
Were any of the above guidelines broken ?
Now some poor woman will go through life without her partner and and their two young kids wont ever see daddy again. Then there is his parents who have lost their 25 yr old son.
accident my ass.
RIP thats so sad for his partner and kids.

Sorry my poor choice of words!
Wasn't really having a go at You, Happy.
More the fact that when people keep calling someone who fires at another person an accident it makes me see red...
Just a bit too close to home for me.
Maybe the media need to use the term "incident" more often so it becomes readily used in a situation such as this. If he was shot by another person who was in no way connected with their hunting party, calling him a heartless idiot is rather fitting. Not going to his aid or at the very least owning up to it is a disgrace.
Sounds like you may know more Steve. From the news reports I've read, the guy was shot, is now dead and no-one is owning up to the shooting. Seems like it he's done a runner to me
Just shows it can happen to the "top" of the hunting comnuity. It's easy to say people look nothing like deer but if a couple of people that are known and respected hunters can shoot someone by mistake it can happen to anyone.
He was an ex wellington Deerstalkers president and im not sure it was his mate. And making us all join up to a drivers club isn't going to stop car crashes is it? Ebf is right about one thing this argument is going to happen every year. The best advice I was given by an old head was this.
Worry about keeping your own shit in order before fixing others.
Jasen
Very true kawekakid. It seems all caliber of hunters are making the mistake which is starting to scare me. I won't shoot unless im looking at that deer in the eye at close range and with 100% of the animal exposed.
Correct (kind of), as pointed out earlier he was ex president and the victim was in another group
If you read what I said carefully, you will notice:
Bottom line is hunters need to change, this is not happening with the same frequency in other firearms sports. And before you get all excited, I am both a hunter and sport shooter, so would be subject to any new safety scheme as well...Quote:

I'm far too new to the sport to make any comment on stricter licensing or anything but it should serve as a reminder to treat firearms with the respect they deserve and identify the target. Thoughts are with the families of those involved, what a terrible situation. You can never be too careful.
You'll find that everyone's opinion is valued here @square1.
You should speak up if you have an opinion ... It's often the newer comers to any sport who have the most refreshing perspectives on things.
