Each person carries a PLB so if needed it is there. And better still some sort of communication (radio) to let camp know plans have changed. Radios are great, provided that the party you are trying to reach don't keep turning the handset off to preserve battery life. Been there, done that.
Gunshots, as with any sound, can be notoriously hard to hear in a lot of situations,, and I for one wont be relying on that method .
