Looks like they were out bunny shooting, saw a deer, chased it into scrub and the victim was shot in the back of the head.
As you said, this is going to ruin someones Xmas.

    Welcome to Sako club.

Nothing wrong with spotlighting at 2.30 in the morning, thats when the deer come out. One has to be more particular who one hunts with and who carries the gun whether it be day or night.

My thoughts and condolences to the family and friends from both sides and the inevitable tough road ahead for both. Tragic.

I dont really get the 2:30am questions? Are you saying people should not shoot at 2:30am? If there are things to shoot at, we will spotlight till daylight. I think most people will. In serious bunny country people would normally come home at 3am or 4am. Still spotlighting bunnies at 2:30am would be more the norm than the exception wouldnt it?

I have heard some terrible horror stories of night shooting and seen some dumb things done. Probably the most dangerous type of shooting we do, and requires the most care.

and yet this is the type of shooting so many new shooters are introduced to due to its higher success rate
