Bloody tragedy for all concerned, thoughts go out to the families
So tragic when this sort of thing happens. Rule number four fellahs. Be careful out there.
Hunting at night, on private land. With torches or thermals.
Identify your target beyond all doubt. Sounds like he could have been shot by the possumers with spotlights. A stray shot? A person doesn't look like a possum.
Check your firing zone
Identity target beyond all doubt.
Kind of says enough doesn't it?Quote:
One group were in a vehicle spotlighting for possums
Article updated today, with the hunter who was shot named and a message from the whanau. Condolences to them, pretty rough.
Yep. Reading between the lines, a young person shot him, but the adult supervising the young person shouldn't have had the firearm in the first place, or else he wouldn't have been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.
As of it wasn't tragic enough a young person has to live with the consequences of their actions.
The authorities have moved awfully fast in this case, getting all the information out in the public arena, which makes a change.

Very sad. This is the first time I can remember that Police have issued a clear statement as to the circumstances. It prevents most of the bullshit speculation/embellishment that often goes on after these events.
It would seem to highlight some of the challenges that exist in this sector - out of the mainstream parts of the country seem to have existed on a fairly fluid compliance-with-the-laws basis for a very long time. It remains a challenge I would suggest to bring these areas up to speed with what people in the main centers are doing for compliance and licencing.
