    Hunting in Australia

I’m looking at contract work in Australia, and will go were the work is but also thinking about the hunting options over there. Most of the contracts seem to be in Brisbane and Melbourne.

Interested to hear from anyone who has hunted public land in either Victoria or Queensland. How is the access to public land and what’s the chances of finding big game? Also has anyone taken a rifle to Aussie to hunt?

Only Victoria has crown land hunting.
Can also be done in NSW too but you will need an R lic as well as FAL.
    Much easier in Vic.
Over seas Visitors to vic can get a short term (I think 30 day lic)

If it's longer term in general you will need.
    Apply for FAL
In Vic for deer buy a game lic for:
Deer, ducks, quail. Abt $55 per species a yr.
In all states you need a permit to buy any firearm. That's after you get the FAL

No crown land hunting in QLD, SA, and just stay away from WA. Firearms are very restricted.

Thanks for this info. Sounds like Victoria is the best bet, I’ll do some more research to check the details. Might be best to bring my bow and hopefully I can hunt straight away.

Yep, as far as public land hunting goes Victoria is the pick by far.
I'm from central Vic originally, been here 10 years now.
Looks like Vic is getting a full duck season this year too which is great to see.

I have a contact in Qld, and my partner and I are headed there for red roar this year, but as others have said no public land hunting in Qld or you have a contact with private land available. I believe the ADA has private land set up in Qld that is accessible for their members on private.....been a few years since i asked so may have changed.

Thanks for confirming makka. And Melbourne is a decent city as far as big city’s go. I lived in Richmond Melbourne for 6 months many years ago.

Sounds like a good time Hamish, good luck.

Crazy to think people would set up a state and decide ‘hey let’s prevent everyone from hunting public land ‘ lol

Ive done it a couple of times. Got a Victorian visitors firearms permit, and to get that I needed permission to hunt from a landowner. I also made it easy by using a local to supply firearms and storage facilities. But just checking my old permit now, and I see it allowed me to bring a firearms as well, as long as it was exported again.

The hardest part was getting the heads through Melbourne airport, as the staff there just decided to give me an absolute run around and BS me into paying extra fees. Until a manager who was a kiwi came along and told them to cut it out and tidied the situation up.

Is it true that now you can not bowhunt in Tasmania and in the Melbourne state?

Tassie and South Australia have banned bowhunting (I think)
