When I was living over there (Innsbruch) you weren't allowed to camp where ever you liked and had to camp at designated camp sites or stay at the various lodges. Maybe different rules for different areas.
Which part of Austria do you live in?
I'll be back there again in January visiting in-laws just north of Wien.
Austria is a stunning country, rich in history, great food and great beer as I miss Erdinger wheat beers.

I live in East Tyrol... a 3 hours drive south-east of Innsbruck.
The law is just as you described. But you may camp almost anywhere if you have permission of the landowner.
