    Hunting Buddy in Hawkes Bay

    Hi everyone.

I would just love to get out and shoot something for the freezer. All the better if my 11 boy can tag along too.

If anyone thinks they can help me out, I sure would appreciate it. It seems this area is infested with deer but they are also looked after by farmers and taken care of by resident hunters. Suffice to say I am struggling to find a place to hunt.

    Cheers

    Richard

Kawekas and Ruahine have a few deer in them. Bit steep for an 11yr old though esp the Ruahines. Give it another month and there will be a few more handy animals out on public land. They taste better than farm deer too!

    What James said Richard.

It can take years to find "Your Own Spot".

Keep trying, look for the fresh sign and get to know the area well.

And Doc Deer do taste way better.

    Cheers

Richard. There are absolutely plenty of Sika in the eastern kawekas up either Makahu or Makino ways past Puketitiri.
It's all DoC land so just park up and get into em. No problem for your young fulla either.
Find clay pans from a vantage point and sit and wait with binoc's.
    good luck mate

Id take you out if I was still living there. Go up Whittle road to Makahu saddle. Head down the track towards Kaweka Flats . Cut up on one of the spurs - either pinnacle or dicks spurs. Climb to you have elevation and growth. Sit and glass with binos . Find a deer then shoot it dead. Job done

We went up to Longview hut and had a look around on the evening and then the next morning. Didn't see anything but a bit of deer sign which must have been 4 months old. Funnily enough coinciding with a note in the camp log book saying a guy saw 4 stags and shot one.

Might go for a walk up the track you suggested this evening.

    Cheers
