    Hunting day bag suggestions

I'm looking at getting a day bag, mainly for walk in day trips hunting deer and chamois but also the odd summer fly camp trip.

What are your guys suggestions on sizes of bags 25, 30, 35L?

How do the rear gun attachment packs go?

Also any suggestions on the best brands to buy?

    Thanks in advance.

Kifaru have come out with some really nice lightweight gear now with their Minikeg.

I have their older stuff, the Gunbearer is the best invention they have as it allows a solid carry of the rifle and quick draw.

Expensive though, like most worthwhile stuff.

Either that or Osprey, get an older model on sale, spray it a darker colour and be happy.

I bought the Stoney Creek Whirinaki when Broncos had them on a lockdown special for $150. I'm really pleased with it

Get a day pack with decent shoulder straps and waist band so you can still carry a reasonable load comfortably. We have a Pikau styled day pack and whilst it is good just to carry a few things for the day, it is next to useless for carrying any load when you shoot something.

I used to use a 25L but prefer my 35-40L now so long as it’s not too bulky when trying to bush stalk. Leaves you room to have it compressed down when not much in it but if you shoot an animal you can bone it out and comfortably carry it out.

We use an eberlestock x1 euro I think its called. only around 25-30 ltr but that seems to work ok for day walks. also has the molle attachment strips in various places. have had tents etc attached to it in the past. what I like the most is it has a rifle scabbard built in which actually sits against your back unlike some of the other carry systems which has the rifle right off to one side or hanging off the back of the pack which i find really unbalances the bag and shifts the center of mass rearward and gets tiring very quickly. With the scabbard against your back it feels a lot more balanced and notice the weight of the rifle a lot less. ours is a few years old now so not sure what latest versions are like.

I'm starting to think the other way. I used to hunt with a pikau or pack with flat nylon straps, then upgraded to flasher bigger packs but find the padded straps are effing hopeless when shouldering the rifle to take a shot. Butt of rifle is unstable, and eye doesn't line up with sights like it usually does. Okay in more open country when you can take the pack off before taking a shot, but not much good bush stalking.

polarfleece..like oversized pillow case...18" across bottom..tennis ball in each corner (dont tell the dog) strap is seatbelt...its long enough to carry deer the comfortable way and place pikau in plastic bag inside deers cavity...
have had hind quarters and boned out front end of 140 lb pig in this...JUST fit...its only time its struggled to hold a bit of hard ask. front end of red no issues at all...normally put all my gear in bum bag inside this and put that around waist when need bag for meat...

    I use one of these.

Total gamechanger for me, being able to load my knives and basics for the day, with enough room for a dry bag full of meat on the way out, with the rifle stowed in the scabbard, it's bloody great.

Coming down off the hill without having the rife on the shoulder is a big deal for this old man, means I can use the trekking pole properly, better balance etc.

    Started with nothing
    Sugar bag pikau.
    Huntech pikau with canvas meatbag.
    Swazi Stag Bag
    Twinneedle Mollyme.

Still have the last three take any of them depending what I am doing.

Mollyme is good to take a bit more gear like camera stuff.
Have fitted 2 man tent and gear for two nights in it could go longer if fly camping and tried harder with gear.

Stag bag is good but with cinched up fairly small.

Pikau good but you have to open and retie it every time you open it.
    But weighs nothing really.
And as cigar said thin shoulder straps have their place.

I had cactus make to fleece cover for mine which stop all noise.
My is the Miklet from cactus but I find it a bit small.
