Grew up hunting Rotoehu, once you work it out your success will increase, it gets less pressure, it used to get bugger all compared to now.

Kroa will be getting smashed by hordes of dogs, trucks with lift kits and snorkels and the entire generation of people who have never hunted dogs without tracking gear..find a place you have to walk to access. I'm not sure it will ever be devoid of hunters. I was talking to a guy for work I saw his dog box and said pines open this weekend aye..he said, they never close.

That said I've seen more than a few while chasing pigs

Hunted around Kaiangaroa and Whirinaki since the early 70's, and Rotoehu since 79. Shot plenty of deer over the years but not hunting there as much these days. Lot more pig hunters about than in the earlier years. Still worth a look though.

If looking Rotoehu I think the native at the lake end of the forest is worth a look, dont know if that becomes DOC or not, plenty of wobblies to lift a meal from if not succesful on a bigger animal.
