Thread: hunting fiordland help please

Hi guys

Im really keen to get into fiordland and do a hunting and fishing tour, mainly tending toward the hunting. but with a little bit of free diving and fishing on the side

Looking at the tour operators the options iv found are the likes of the Tapuku tours (Takapu Charters)
and similar,

Im keen to hear from what people who have done it think and what they reckin I should do

I too would be interested in any info on this. Cost wise what would a week set you back?

Depending on how many you want to travel with , and you level of comfort you enjoy . You could considder fly in on to the tops and fly camp for maybe a little less than boat charter . Potentually Be better hunting BUT SHITE ! If weather bad . Call me a soft cock but I'd need a lot of encouragement to snorkel off the coast , don't no what it be like in fiords with the fresh water on top of sea separation , from the top it looks black as a black thing down there ? . Hope does not sound negative , just trying to spark debate or input for you . I hade 14 days hunting / fishing from a wee dingy and fly camping once over the roar . Was primo hunting , but fishing was lackluster . I myself would like a charter trip , but mainly for tuna fishing .

I have a cobber that just got back from a trip. They had a ball. Was $2100 each for a week out of Dusky. They went everywhere. Even seen a few moose cams

Just out of interest r93 what would be your guess on $ to fly on to tops late spring ?

Id like to know the difference $ wise for both fly camping and boat based.
dont worry mate some people are scared of their own shadow, chacing crays comes only second to hunting for me, good for the lungs

From where, where to and who with Munsey?

Cost us 1400 from memory from milford to sutherland and back.
Can only be dropped on beach because of wilderness area starts there.
Depending on how much you like fishing hiring a boat would be pretty attractive, see a lot more of the coast.

I went down last April cost a couple of grand but would not hesitate to do it all over again.
We were on board the Jewel from Doubtful sound and spent 5 days working our way around Doubtful, Breaksea and Dusky sound. We lived life pretty dam well on board, with amazing crew and great food, Rob the skipper dropped us into some awesome dive sites including a wreck in Dusky sound, unfortunately for me the trip was primarily diving and I only spent a few hours on the land but would have loved to spend more time.
There is a report on here but went to post the link and realised I have shuffled all my photo bucket accounts around and now the links no longer work if you were interested could send you through a few photos or could post them on here again...

Went in May/June on the Seafinn. Pretty new boat and the skipper, Chris, was great and if you want and is a keen hunter too. 11 of us went at $2000 each.

Saw alot of deer and the diving and fishing was great. Hard to expain what it's like down there, photos and video dont show it.

Is their the opporutunity to skipper your own boat?

An option ? if you can get it over willmont pass( private road) into deep cove . We got a kayak firm to take all our gear inflatable motor etc across lake then over pass $75 ech way . Some one will no the deal as I'm pretty sure you could get a boat towed over , either on there trailer or launch your own boat with trailer tied underneath your boat , be a slow trip though .

I more mean hire a boat but skipper it myself to remove the cost of labour out of the trip
