Thread: Hunting & fishing outer Pelorus?

Just a heads up, I think the limit of blue cod in your possession at any time is 2 per person in the Challenger area, no accumulation. Having said that, the blue cod fishery is very healthy in the outer Pelorus and QC sounds. Last time out in QC Sound we caught our two each (8 in total) in about 10 minutes.

Sorry mate, I completely forgot to send you some details. Glad you had a good trip. Since the father passed and the mother moved to Havelock the farm has steadily gone backwards. It is hard and unforgiving land out there. I just don't think it's viable to farm out there anymore. Don't think Trevor's heart is in it anymore, don't get me wrong he loves the place but the farms going backwards.

The Outer Sounds have slowly but surely reverted over the last 30 years .
I look at the landscape when I drive the road to our place and see hillsides that were once clear , but now covered in scrub .
Viability of properties and the reality of commerce has taken it toll and that is a natural progression, but I always wonder what the early pioneers/farmers who worked themselves to an early grave clearing that land would think if they could see it now .
I’m just glad I got to see it before time and nature grabbed hold of it once again.

manuka used to be bane of our existance...now its a bonus with honey folks paying silly money for scrub covered land.....often really good money for just having hives on your property...let the scrub grow....oh how things have changed.

Great to hear you had a good trip UK exile and that is a whopper cod !
I got back sunday night from a few days on the other side of the hill from foots place - brought back 3 cod at 43/44/50 cm we got on our abortive trip Stephen’s passage. The fishery is in ok shape for cod but snapper really great now getting to be like it was 40-50 years ago.
If the cullers got 9 deer two weeks ago up behind us the they must have missed 19 there be fresh sign everywhere. Completely nocturnal we reckon mate went outside just after 6 to fill the wood basket and spooked a bunch 20 m from our front door!
We out dawn and dusk but saw nothing but fresh sign from the night before

We'd downloaded the NZ fishing rules app and it was clear so emailed MPI. Here's the reply we got.

I have attached the blue cod rules brochure to this email – this should have all the information you need.

The daily bag limit is 2 per active fisher, per day. The accumulation limit is two days’ worth – so 4 per active fisher if caught over several days. You can take 4 through to Canterbury as both areas are blue cod red zones.

If you have accumulated more than a daily limit, I recommend bagging and tagging each day differently. You could also take photos with timestamps to prove this to a fishery officer if questioned.

Please bear in mind that fish on a vessel must remain whole or gutted (measurable state) unless being eaten immediately onboard (as part of your daily limit).

The blue cod season is completely closed from 1 September to 20 December every year. Please give us a call on 0800 4 POACHER (0800 476 224) if you have any further questions.

@AMac zero snappper for us. Likely because we stayed within 15mins of accomodation due to having 3, 6, 9yr olds on board each trip. Hooked in number order many spotties, cod, dogfish, gurnard, kawhai, barracuda. Feed many spotties to shags to get rid of them. Good fun for all. Didn't specifically try for deer or pigs as took the 9yr old out each time and also was told minimal deer. There was some shots on the property one afternoon so poaching going on :-(

Apparently snapper are out in the deep holes with D'Urville /Stephens passage good spots to target them, the weather stopped me unfortunately that and the transducer cable becoming unplugged so I lost my sounder 50+ km out from the bach.

Out from Wilsons Bay where you were can be good for snapper, gurnard and Kingis over summer with lots of work ups from early morning right into late afternoon - dropping lures down to bottom circa 50-60m was productive last Xmas holidays. Foots has always had plenty of goats and pigs coming over from the QE2 covenant land he has a couple of traps up there for them.
