Want to take the pup up the kaimais tomorrow, is there access from grammer road like the topo maps show? Or any other suggestions as to which roads give access up there? Ive been up thompsons before and id like to avoid it and try somewhere new if possible.

Mate never accessed via Grammer Road note: Deer numbers low north of Katikati prime area Thompsons to Whakamara Plateau
Wrights rd also has access and deer, plenty of trampers though but you can get a far way back on the long loop then peel into the bush from there.

Why not take the Mt Eliza track from the Thompson's Road car park?
I've found Whaka has been absolutely thrashed over the years. I've been told the north-south tracks are a good place to walk around but I've never been myself.
Fellas, just a heads up that since the opening of the Hauraki Rail Trail, and the associated attractions around Waihi, the walking tracks in the northern and central Kaimais are way way busier than they used to be. I know cos I live there! Have been speaking to the DOC guys who have been upgrading all the tracks and there are plans to further increase the foot traffic in the area with more hit upgrades.
If you're thinking of hunting the Kaimais, it will pay for you to get well off the beaten track in the central areas. Dilly dallying around the main walking tracks is a waste of time.
30 people in the waiorongomai Valley just before Christmas. Insane. Albeit you can't really hunt that valley as its so steep but still.Quote:

Went up wright road and up to the end of the loop, the bush in there is terrible! Thick steep shit. Ill go check out the tops one day but anything below that you guys can have it ��

Dog indicated an animal in the river photo though the wind was extremely fickle gusting 360 degrees at times typical Kaimai's so no visual on my part. Still a good 6 hours on the hill is time well spent

The Kaimais is terrible to hunt now. Since they've upgraded the huts (great huts) the foot traffic there is just insane.
Te Rereatukahia hut is always full, always one or two hunters as well.

Went for a walk up the Whakamarma end last week and managed to see one as it bolted. A lot of people in the area and the deer are touchy.
When you say "a lot of people in the area" are you meaning hunters or trampers?...if trampers, then they are easy to get away from as they tend to stay on tracks.Quote:

I lived in Katikati for 30 years. Grammar road is mostly pvt land and the owners have been plagued by hunters coming in from the back. Trail cameras are now installed to take pics of offending transgressors. Similar issues up Work Rd, where locals have, on occasion put tractor and trailer across the upper road before flushing out ‘poachers’. If I still lived there, I would have a look round Mt Elisa, near the big grass clearings. I would also go in at Upland road, walk right to the end of the Nth/Sth track as it heads south and branches off. At that branch, go straight ahead thru scrubby stuff, then climb one of two spurs to the top. Take water before the climb and scope the large slips up there.
