Thread: Hunting knives which one to get?

Hi Everyone, so i can sit on the net looking for knives and read countless reviews but im after people that actually are hunters that use them heaps. So im after a knife and nothing over $100 any recommendations? Please and thankyou

Knives are a very personal item. Best to go and try some to see how they feel and fit.
I carry and use this everyday. It’s a Svord Farmers model. Won’t suit everybody but it’s what works for me.

depends on what you want to skin and gut, for a cheapy bunny knife you cant go past a mercator (about $50). i have even skinned goats and a deer with one

Avoid these.

my Mercator has been through about 250 ducks a few goats a pig and 1 deer, absolutely rate it.
compact sharp as a scalpel and easy to carry.
only down side would be that it is easy to loose so I keep mine on a paracord lanyard

for a cheap on the hill knife you could do a lot worse than a bahco about $10 each and you won't cry if you loose it too, just gotta sharpen it a bit more often than some of the high end knives

I use a mercator (make sure if you get one, its a genuine one not a copy)

Depends on the budget, as said nothing wrong with a bahco, there is someone on here... @Nga they make a "jack of all trades" knife that has been popular.

Plus one for the bahco the colour makes them difficult to loose. For a folder mercators are hard to beat. A bit thin in the handle but will do everything.

X2 on the svord farmers or similar shape anyway.
had a Kershaw bear hunter for years. That was a good knife (still is I spose but only for the feckers that pinched it when we got burgled).
Got the son a similar one -Antelope? I think, for his bday. That's not a bad knife either.
Those ones by Nga look good but out of his price range.
I'd be suggesting something closer but not quite a skinner. It will still cut up everything but have a nice belly in it.
make it a lot easier skinning a redskin especially if he doesn't want a bunch of holes in the skin.
In saying that the Peranta type blades with the replaceable inserts seem to get good write ups. Never had my hands on one and they are definitely not a skinner shape.

Hard to go past any of the knives used at the works. 30-40 bucks and easy to sharpen. Victronox, victory etc. Green river still bloody good as well. Or go real cheap and get a Bahco, cut like a razor and nice and small. I've gone away from carrying a knife on my belt, just easier to have a small one in a pouch or pack. Mercator will dress an animal in the bush piece of piss.
