I avoid any food that dehydrates me. So tasty or not Salami and cheese are out. Complex Carbs are best for sustained energy and eating little snacks through the day is better than stopping for a substantial lunch.
I like something that lives in the freezer ready to grab- premade sammys and trail mix.

Most places I hunt, it is pretty easy to re-hydrate. Water is never a problem and if I'm not sure I carry it.

    Salami and cheese dehydrates you/us?

I find carbs like crackers and breads dehydrate me an will also give me the shits if eating for multiple days but can get away with one day.

Yes, Salami and Cheese are high in salts / nitrates which our body wishes to excrete, so we pee more than if we eat complex low GI carbs like cooked Kumera, Brown rice etc. crackers and (most) breads are not complex carbs. Salami, and other preserved meats contain preservatives which are enzyme inhibitors and these make it more difficult for us to digest our food.
The real answer is for us to copy what endurance athletes use as tucker. Those people have done all the research and have all the answers so we should just copy them imo.

Two sandwiches would only get me from breakfast to lunch just if I'm out doing stuff.

diabetic's worked things out years ago...more sugar makes you dehydrated so your body pees out what water it has to make you drink more,if you drink sugary drinks you will pee even more and more and more drink pee drink pee drink pee all day long....now if you dro pthe sugar from the drink, you hydrate and stop needing to pee.

Where I hunt I have to carry water. Mostly high stuff above water or the creeks are likely contaminated by pigs, so water is an issue.
Dont laugh but the most successful ( as in go further faster) Breakfast / Lunch for me is home made Dehydrated Porridge Bars. I like porridge for breaky so just make a big pot, once cooked but still hot add an egg and stir through, then big scoop of yogurt, nuts, frozen mixed berries, honey, brown sugar, coconut. Test flavour, spread on trays in dehydrator. When dehydrated bag up slices into enough for a day amounts and chuck it in the freezer. Oat powered energy bars. A bag of Dates is hard to beat for cost, convenience, energy yield.

A friend of mine was a multiple NZ cross country MTB champion and he never used the fancy electrolyte drinks or protein bars. On race day he was powered by Raro (the sachet stuff you mix up) and Christmas cake. Worked for him.

Júaaaa.....man does not live by bread alone. That kind of prey is welcome on any hunt.
There is still gunpowder left, the Grim Reaper can wait.

Osm if it's a small day hunt.

If it's a big day hunt I'll take a small 500ml thermos with boiling water in it, take a Jeds coffee bag, condensed milk tune, spork and a Radix 600g meal

Fill the Radix up and have plenty left to put the coffee bag in to brew and then make a large coffee up in the thermos.
That's a pretty mean combo year round for me and weighs bugger all in the scheme of things
