Thread: Hunting Pre-Roar South Island Reds

Hey boys

Myself & a mate or two are working on a plan to hit some South Island ( probably Canterbury - Otago ) high country mid March. I've never hunted these areas so was just after a little info. I'm not after your "spot x" but just some intel so PM me if you like.

I've talked to a couple of people & heard that the choppers have been pretty busy knocking animals over, But be nice to walk / hunt around some different country. Ideally we would fly in & either base camp & / or fly camp different areas.

saw 4 deer from my work truck today...happily grazing behind a dairy farm 400 yards from a very very busy road...they live there Im told along with another mob of 9.
good binos and a small piece of foam mat to park ya butt on are a must have.
there are more deer around now than Ive ever seen before...pick a spot and go to it.....enjoy the visit no matter the outcome and it will be a sucess.

If your going to Heli in then options would be, from Hanmer Springs or MT Hutt heli have a base up the Rakaia, Tim Hutchinson owns Double Hill stn & flys for them, or from the Coast over the divide. Anywhere in the Rakaia area would be worth a look, iconic area.
Otago, by mid March your almost into the ballot block time for a lot of the country down there but there are operators in Wanaka & Makarora

Heli rates are higher than you would be used to in the NI @Philipo so be prepared to fork out, esp Mt Hutt Helicopters as it would probably be the squirrel and it may be from their base and not Tim's unless he gets it to his place well before easter.
