ok here is SUGGESTION for you....go into the likes of guncity (yes I know its unbelievable I typed that...might need a sit down and cuppa tea ) and buy an old shitter .303 and 50 rounds of ammunition on condition you can sell rifle back to them in one weeks time for $100 less than you bought it for. they have absolutely nothing to lose if your legit .....as the mouse said "its worth a crack Nigel"

Totally legal if they have a FAL. The usual oponions presented as facts that happens on here all the time. Shame you're wrong locality TK, I'm always happy to kend a young guy a rifle to hunt with. Have done it all my life and dont ever recall getting "skunked" although some guys who went wallaby shooting with my rifles and ammo did report more kills than rounds I'd given them once I got home and tallied up. Must have been getting two per shot more often in one trip than I have in a lifetime!

I don't think Tentman was referring to your particular experience, especially considering he was quoting someone else.
Your experience is one that would make anyone shy of lending a firearm and I'm sorry your friend went through that it must have been devestating for him.

if you know the fellas well....or are there to supervise no problem..... if they are dodgy or have something sinister on mind BIG problem

Ive given the OP a way he can do/get what he asked for...up to him if he takes advice....IF he has acess to a farm or block with lots of goats HE COULD ALSO ask for someone to come and shoot some goats with him and share rifle if the person is OK with that..... now thats a win win and extra win

Would you lend your car to a stranger simply for the fact they have a driver's licience? Not me. Might end up with its arse end parked in a shop or worse.

stranger being the operative word

Most situations that have come up with me regarding borrowing (or hire in one case) were due to travel restictions and hassles. More often from people travelling in from overseas or on a holiday / trip where there is no storage facility of a firearm to go with.....

In these cases almost without exception, someone local has been in attendance (hunting with a professtional guide in the overseas cases and with locals on the travelling ones) in which case they were lent while the owner was there.

I have n the past allowed people I know to use my firearms (with FAL of course) when they were looking at calibres to buy or simply did not have an appropriate cablibre in their own selection...but they have always been people I know well and often I would go along as well because it would be something I enjoy as well...

As far as Hire goes, it is so much cheaper to buy one and sell it afterwards that as a business model there is really no call for it. Especially when you consider most hire guns will generally wind up being well used second hand rifles (unlike rental cars where age is a factor). A decent second hand firearm would be around $500-$1000 for one that will be more than effective and it could be sold later for similar money....with no deadline for return, where a rental would likely be $75 to $100 per day for a decent one ( that would be 2% to 5% of new per day on par with renting chainsaws , concrete mixers etc...) and would need to be rented out quite a lot before being sold to break even as a business model would be a great way for a business to lose money.

He could always shell out for a Tikka as they always seem to increase in price for a 2nd hand one going by the trademe listings.........

Cheers all for the advice and considerations. I knew it was highly unlikely but worth a shot (pun intended). Will keep an eye out on the 2nd hand market and see if I can wrangle something. I look forward to getting out into the bush and learning how to properly hunt (outside of rabbit shooting).

You might have better luck asking to tag along with someone that's going for a hunt. You might get the chance to have a shot under the supervision of the owner. There's only 2 people Id lend one of my firearms to without me supervising, my wife and a good mate, we have been shooting together for a very long time...

Im embarrassed our fellow shooters aren't more friendly to your request. Probably coz of the current government and their bullshit ( stick the knife in at all cost policies )
I got my start because a family friend l gave me a 243 to use. Shot my 1st pig and i was hooked.
Probably he is the reason i have no money now, but i am forever grateful.
Not sure it helps but i have a remington m7 in 7mm08 you can use for free but based in South Waikato so cost of living and fuel costs could be a hindrance

Some places used to hire firearms, for example , Gunworks in Canterbury. However, I'm not aware of any at the moment, but I haven't checked either.
