    Hunting with the son

    G'day all,

Somewhat reluctant to ask this question because I've seen the reaction to some who have asked similar questions.

This weekend I'm taking the son for an overnighter. We're in Christchurch so want to go somewhere relatively close by allowing us to get from home to hut, by dark, leaving at 1pm.

Like to see and shoot a Deer if possible.

He's 9 so not too keen on a stack of river crossings or the like.

    Any advice?

I thought Turkey Flats and Anti-Crow hut but I know half of Chch could be there.

    Any advice welcomed.

    Cheers,

    Fitzy.

Just to add - I am newish to hunting and have joined NZDA and Handloaders so I can learn.

Have plans to get out, explore and learn.

Not after anyone's secret spot. Just some guidance of where to take a young lad who's frothing at the thought of hunting with his old man.

Great work and so much better than Tv/internet/gaming for the young fella. I've taken my boy out a few times in warmer weather and stayed in a tent but I'd totally support using a hut in winter! What about Anti crow hut as you say? Failing that, Boyle/Magdalen huts on the St James Track or Pinchgut hut on Mt Thomas although there is a river crossing right at the start and possibly track damage from the big rain event recently? Nina Hut, Wharfedale Hut... You need a decent fireplace, marshmallows, and sunny/ open areas close to your choice of accommodation! Go well.

ps with them at that age don't be concerned about the odd private land paid hunt to help keep the interest up.
I'm sure there will be place down your way were you can book 4wd / walking access to a hut on private land say $30-$50 night and say $150 - $350 for an animal. (that's places that allow unguided hunters)
Many will insist on a guide as well to ensure you don't take prime Stag's.
I have had access to a couple of places in the NI with my sons that let us hunt on our own.

For sure. I've signed up to HunterHQ so there are options there. Backup plan though. Don't want to start him there.

Never doubt the valve of the odd goat as well for keeping interest up. My boys started with the odd goat first.

This is probably a surprise to many but because I'm so new to it all I'm not aware of anywhere even for goats!

Will keep pounding the tracks and get the mileage. Knowledge will come.

Had a stellar time. Didn't see any animals but had a brilliantly beautiful and challenging walk, good hut stay, stunning scenery and he got to fire the .270.

    He's hooked.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have a list now and will work my way through it!
