Was wandering the ruahine scrub this morning chasing a few roaring stags and the wind was being a pain in the arse. I thought to myself i'm glad ive got this powder puffer bottle thingy to test wind direction. Bought a couple at the sika show last year, bloody great idea, couple of squeezes and the powder puffs in the air, bingo you now know your scent is going straight to the stag, bugger.
Which brings me to this post, whats your favourite tips from this roar.
If you don't go hunting you won't get anything.
i need to invest in some better spotting gear, the miles i put in to only get close to 6-8 pointers was rediculious. was still good getting out but that time couldve been spent chasing bigger stags.

just like stags they don't get to be old by being silly
One I learnt a long time ago was when you here a stag roaring cut the distance to him quickly.
More than one car in the carpark go somewhere else
If a stag is roaring well don't roar at him, close the distance & only roar when your in close if you need too to draw him out, quite often if they have hinds they will move off when you roar at them closing the distance.
Even when there's a load of drongos at the pub, it's still possible to pull a decent bird.Quote:

If theres no action, and no replys to your roars dont get dishearted. Stags often come in quietly for a look or open up awhile after you have roared. As you roar along the ridges, stop and wait and listen hard before moving on, keep your wits about you..always watch that wind:)
Pay for a fenced stag, heaps easier and ya can be back drinking at the hut in no time :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

After a bit of a sleep in the rain with no roars heard, I started moving down the ridge roaring and waiting every 30 metres/5 mins. After about 6 roars I was standing atop a log when I heard the telltale sound of a stag coming in. Seconds later and this scruffy one comes trotting along the ridgeline, shot him in the neck at 10m while he was still trotting, otherwise he would have run over me.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...25e9b67790.jpg
While I was cutting him up, another snuck in for a look and cut my wind at less than 10 metres. No roars or moans at all for the day.
If you spook one by noise alone dont jump the gun and go chase him , let him come back and check you out

I'm with HNTMAD.....sadly a week chasing round and round has taught me that the local New World is always my best bet!!! lol

My biggest tip would be dont Dislocate your Shoulder requiring surgery a month before hand.
Postpone any surgery until June.
Many have laughed when i pull my daughters bubble mix out of my pocket to check wind. Works mint though, beauty with bubbles is they last a while and you can see them for ages if they dont pop:D
Actually saw the bubble trick on one of @Norways old vids so it must be cool :D
If I got a bottle of bubbles out to check for the wind I would be worried my daughter would be right behind them

That is why I went open site this roar :-)
Instead of playing with ya soapy bubbles and puff bottle why don't you tape a bit of cotton about 250mm long to the underside of your barrel at the pointy end to use as a wind direction indicator. If you are in wet country use waxed dental floss :thumbsup:
Been using this for years. Rifle in hand stalking and the occasional glance at the cotton tells me where the wind is.

Tip three. Back up matches.
My last trip was cut short when the ignition on my cooker decided to fail and my one and only lighter had managed its way out of my pocket up some steep rubbish..
This is valid for hunting anytime,
not just the Roar!!!
