    Hunting Trip

Hey me and my dad and brother wants to go out and get our first red deer, were based in taranaki and have hunted plenty of fallow, goats etc. Was wondering which doc land around the north island (not too keen heading over to bay of plenty) has high numbers of red deer or help lead us in the right direction, planning on maybe a week or less camping and travelling round October, we have done a trip hunting around tongariro no luck but plenty of sign but way too much people around, cheers

Welcome to the forum. Head over to the introductions thread and tell us about yourself. Personally my best advice would be have a look at a spot x book and pick a place based off that.

Welcome the Ruahine are our closest and there are heaps of reds going from any road end.
In past Alice Nash to Iron Gate is a good place to start.
Ever thought of joining the Nth Taranaki NZDA we regularly do branch hunts.

Hey! As for red deer, it is possible to stalk them on the DOC lands in the middle of the Central North Island; particularly the Kaimanwara Ranges. Not as busy as Tongariro and there is reasonable numbers of red deer. October should be a good time for your tourism.

High numbers of reds = Ruahine ranges.
